Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

The problem was that every bastard in the world wanted to talk about it.

Is Phil still hiding from level seven down?

Well, obviously know since Fitz and Simmons aren't level seven. However, it does seem to be still compartmentalized/need to know.

The way Coulson is running around in public amongst other Shield personell his cover should blow at one point.. all it takes is for some mid level Shield person who was stationed on the Helicarrier during the attack in Avengers run across Coulson and his team in some other Shield installation and go "Hey.. weren't you supposed to be dead?"

Coulson and his team are just too public, they fly around in a friggin' huge plane so it's only a matter of when and not if, at least if you would be realistic (as much as you can be in any TV show).

Wondering if the plan at Marvel is to assume that the Conversation we're all expecting to see has already happened, off-camera.

Which would be disappointing, but perhaps inevitable. Maybe it's been planned for another of those One-Shots...

Yeah, I think there's an inherent tension in keeping him a secret while having him actively involved in lots of things. I think it exists for two reasons: 1) I think they do want the reveal of Coulson to the Avengers to be in Avengers 2. Barring that, to Captain America in a post-credits Winter Soldier scene, but that's unlikely. 2) It created that little dramatic moment and internal conflict for Coulson with his girlfriend thinking he's dead.

Certainly, the odds of someone knowing he died finding out increases dramatically the more SHIELD HQ is involved with the bus, but it's a big organization and it's possible the majority even on the Hellicarrier weren't told about Coulson's death. The number who know of his death but are ignorant of his resurrection could be quite few.

The only problem with that is that Fury announced Coulson was "down" over the ships PA system. Now I'm sure with the damage to the ship at that point, there would have been some people on board who would not have heard or understood what was said, but I'm sure word of mouth would have gotten around.

Yeah from the pilot it seems that his death was common knowledge to any agent rated level six or below, which for all we know makes up 90% of the organization. I mean even if these clearance levels go all the way up to ten, it stands to reason that there'd be fewer people in the loop the higher up you go.

The only thing I can think of is that whoever is coordinating their interactions with other Shield agents is making sure no-one who isn't in the know crosses paths with them. The easiest way to do this of course is by classifying all of their cases level 7 as a matter of course.

Wondering how many people are getting promotions in clearance levels just to cope with the travels of the Bus.

Fitz looked like he loved pushing around minions.

There's a ball busting tyrant under there not too far from the surface.

He may not completely enjoy going back to only working with one other person who he would NEVER yell at becuase she's so damn cute.

It's odd their unrequited relationship, they can't get past the sibling thing, so they're both looking at every one else first.

^Yeah I can absolutely see Fitz becoming the big bad in a future season. He has all the hallmarks of a mad scientist supervillian in the making.

That's all a fair point. Like I said, I think it makes more sense why they're doing it this way than makes sense as an in-universe explanation.

I thought the level clearance about Coulsons death went something like this:
1-6 - Don't know he died, so they assume he is alive.
7 - Knew he died and thinks he is still dead.
8 - Knew he died and knows he is now alive.

So the only people who would be surprised to see him would be those few who are at level 7...

IIRC, in the pilot Ward said that he knew Coulson was dead because he was Level 6...then Coulson steps out of the shadows and says, "Welcome to Level 7." So the implication is that 5 and below don't know Coulson died; 6 thinks he's still dead; 7 and above know he's still alive.

Though the clearance for knowing that Coulson is around may have lowered since he got so active in the field.

Given the way the Bus has been bouncing all over the planet since the series started, the security clearance for need-to-know on that point has got to have been lowered somewhat.

But if the 5's and below never knew he'd died anyway, that would really only screw up the 6's...plus super-heroes and cellists.

Everybody with Level 7 and above has clearance to know he's alive-- but that doesn't mean they've been told he's alive if they don't need to know.
