Really? People care what some random idiot has to say about Star Trek. He seems like a TNG fan who doesn't remember what got TNG launched in the first place. Who cares if he likes it or not?
Seems fitting they are TNG fans. Feels like Worf with Klingons.
I stopped caring about RLM a very long time ago.
A bit ironic considering, as reviewers with well thought-out and intelligent analyses of the various films they come across, Mike and Co are all about quips and acting like teenagers.
Mike just wants 90s Trek. He would be the type of guy who hated TNG because it wasn't like TOS. I'm not sure why he thought the first episode was bad, but he would have liked it if it was shot like a 90s show. Though I agree with him, too many of the P+ show characters talk in an annoying way sometimes.
But that timeline has alternates.
Mike’s comments makes a lot of sense when you consider what his favorite Trek is. I’m not just talking about TNG. In one of his videos, he says that TMP is his favorite of all the films. That is absolutely in line with his preference of characters being written “poised and stately”, with characters acting like professional military personnel. TMP is about as self serious as Star Trek gets, and TNG for the most part played in that mold. You know what? That’s fair. Modern Trek putting a stronger emphasis on the emotions and psychology of the characters is the complete opposite of what he wants out of Trek.
That said, he comes off like he has selective memory. The way he phrases it, it sounds like he means to speak of all Trek 1966-2005. That’s where I call bullshit. DS9, VOY, and ENT were made with the explicit intention of showing a crew that didn’t fit with what Gene wanted depicted in TNG. DS9’s non-Starfleet personnel. The Maquis in VOY. The less enlightened/evolved humans in ENT. That was all intentional in order to cheat Gene’s “no interpersonal conflicts” rule. Hell, even TNG began bending that rule a lot more once Gene became less involved. Practically broke it with “Chain of Command”.

In other words, standard fare for Trek Fandom. When the next iteration comes along, they'll all bitch and moan about how it's a disgrace and will look at the Kurtzman era as being the last time we ever had (or ever will have) True Trek. Because as you know, what is current is crap.
While I get the joke you're making, I just want to point out McCarthy could do some great music when freed of the restrictions that 90s Trek shows had on their music. His score for Generations, is really amazing.
I concur, when McCarthy was allowed to stretch his arms he could put out the best of television music for Trek. I’d have love more music like “Yesterday’s Enterprise” and less of this:

GEN has some of the most beautiful music of the entire movie franchise and that includes TMP and all three Kelvin Timeline films. Dennis McCarthy's work on that movie is sublime.
I was always partial to the James Horner scores, despite their somewhat repetitive and recycled nature with other films at the time (Aliens, Cocoon, etc.) “Stealing the Enterprise” from TSFS always gets my blood flowing.
Your comment about Horner's music being recycled and repetitive reminds me of a joke I heard someone make about the scene in The Perfect Storm (another movie Horner did the music for) when waves are violently crashing against the fishing boat. "I don't get it, are there waves rocking the boat, or is the Reliant attacking?"
And when it's James Horner's music, the answer to that question is a resounding yes.
