That’s what happens when you let the actors have creative control over the production.
That and the fact that the Director had no idea how to handle a Star Trek movie, since he had absolutely no interest in the IP beforehand.
That's why it feels so disjointed compared to the TV series.
If he sprinkled that in through-out the TV series, I could see it fit.
But they never mentioned JLP love of going fast.
Water polo Archer was ALSO rock climbing Archer when he wanted to impress Captain Erika Hernandez.
If Picard wanted to get thrills driving dune buggies, nothing was stopping him from doing it in the holodeck instead of violating the Prime Directive. Yet all previous evidence indicated that Picard's idea of a good time was pretending to be Dixon Hill.
I think the horse thing was mentioned in that episode where terrorists try to take over the Enterprise during a baryon sweep. However, he's never shown riding in TNG because Patrick was not a horse rider and in Generations Shatner had to help teach him about horse riding.
He's shown preparing to ride a horse on the holodeck in "Pen Pals" and later we see his saddle in "Starship Mine." He doesn't ride onscreen until he goes into the Nexus in GEN.
Meanwhile in SNW we got Pike riding a horse because it was established in The Cage that he had two back home.Well, Kirk showed zero interest in riding horses until Generations, where he was basically playing an idealized version of Shatner than Kirk.

We saw his horse in The Cage, didn’t we?
We saw the two mentioned in the Talosian illusion, but the horse in SNW season 1 wasn't the same breed as either.

Picard was riding a horse on the holodeck in Pen Pals. Also, there's The Loss where Picard is trying to convince Riker to join him riding horses on the holodeck, even offering to program a "docile steed" for Riker to ride.
Do they look the same...mane, the tail, everything?
