Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

We'll likely see every character from TOS at some point in SNW. Now we'll get the long lost origin story of Lieutenant DeSalle!
At the very least they may show the handoff of the Enterprise from Christopher Pike to James T Kirk at the end of the series run whenever that is, and the official promotion of Christopher Pike to Fleet Captain.

As someone who's still enjoys all the original series characters, I hope they DON'T litter the show with cameos of younger versions of all the later Enterprise crewmembers from TOS. If they do include the doctor character of Boyce or Piper (who's actually a TOS era character, but yeah you could posit he served under Pike), that would be fine too.

I hope they don't bring in Dr M'Benga, as that would bring up the question as to why he is content to serve under Dr McCoy 11 years after he served as CMO of the Enterprise under Captain Pike"s command.

We have Captain Christopher Pike, Mr. Spock, and Number One as the main character holdovers from TOS "The Cage". They don't need to litter the cast with any more character callbacks in my opinion. They should just go forward and make 'New Star Trek History' with other minor characters who are effectively new to Star Trek canon. Hell, during the run of TOS we had a number of one appearance wonders, especially in the first season.

The idea that 4 to 5 years after the events of TOS "The Cage", Captain Pike has the same crew is stretching it. Depending on how you look at it Star Trek The Motion Picture took place 5 years after TAS. By that time Spock had returned to Vulcan and Dr McCoy had retired from the service.

So yeah I hope they don't try to pepper the supporting cast with callbacks to truly minor characters from TOS "The Cage", but that's me. YMMV. :)

The cage and that early era of TOS are my favorite parts of Star Trek history. I don't think that M'Benga, Uhura, Desalle, Giotto, or Leslie showing up is additive. I think it is effectively what Lower Decks is currently doing-Star Trek street cred. "We promise we are really fans everyone. We promise it so much! Look at all the cool references we are putting in that proves we are real fans. Please don't hate us."

It's an appeasement model that I find suspicious and lacking in actually building a believable world any more.

I'm seeing unslotted pylons... :D

or putting them in would have made the graphic too noisy.

I'm not trusting any graphics not officially released by CBS.

Maybe they can use Samuel Cogley. In a episode. Also maybe Dax. I think at this point Dax is either the nerd or the pilot. Maybe the politican.

I don't think it's idiotic
Plus that's a lot bigger then how the cutouts would need to be drawn.

Or they could not. Stop relying on past characters.

Yes I know that's iconic considering 3 of the main cast.

Honestly, that's why doing new characters is best suited for this series. Three familiar characters, well regarded by the audience thus far, grounds the series in a very good way to, well, explore new characters.

But it's fun to sprinkle old characters and stuff into the mix with new characters and stuff. Samuel Cogley for example could be called in to defend a runaway slave called Gut'roo'pu from the species called Greosians who have feathers and speak only in a alien form of sign language.

I know how they could use her. Thay do a vacation episode were half the crew goes to a alien planet that is hosting the Federation Olympics. She is of course one of the athletes but it's not really a big part of the story. The main story is about Spock getting Drunk from a alien whiskey he foolishly thought he could handle because Vulcans don't get drunk on most forms of alcohol. and then having a Bucket stuck on his head half of the episode and everyone trying to help him get it off before Pike catches on.

Make the bucket the infamous Spock toy helmet recently referenced in last season's Lower Decks and you're on.

That is the model every show has followed.

TNG played on TOS's popularity to launch itself even if Gene pretended he was ignoring it as much as possible. All Trek series are one degree or another of fanwank.

To a degree and I'll certainly not begrudge the effort. But, it's a model that is limiting the creativity.

Star Trek almost exclusively deals in nostalgia now. Discovery went to the 32nd century and still couldn’t shake it.

Hell, so does Star Wars. The Sequels might have tried to put on a veneer of originality but the First Order was just the Empire 2.0 right down to the very similar uniforms and organizational symbol, Snoke was just the Emperor 2.0 and Kylo Ren was the next Skywalker to fall to the Dark Side and pledge himself to dark teachings and conquering the galaxy. All popular franchises either repeat themselves ad nauseam or even when they try to do something new it's always with a healthy spoonful of nostalgia to remind you that the new villains are just the old ones with new names and different clothes.

I don’t really disagree, but I think fans should expect more from long running properties.
