Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I'd just make April from the United States and give him an origin from a state where no Trek Captain has yet hailed from.

If Sulu can be American, I'd say make April born and bred in Beijing or Mumbai. It is the 23rd century, give it some life.

Why not? Just show him onscreen and in live action. TAS is cool and the computer screen readouts in DSC are nice, but nothing is as good as seeing an Enterprise Captain in the flesh.

I'm okay with a British Robert April. I didn't see "The Counter-Clock Incident", but Diane Carey did an effective sales job for the idea in those two novels.

In my fanfic I had April being from a colony world. A working class, up from the ranks type. I thought it would be a contrast to other Trek captains.
Working class types in Starfleet apparently are so rare that O'Brien ended up becoming the most important figure in Starfleet centuries down the line.

And Tasha Yar came from that failed colony. Worf was raised on Earth. Ro grew up in a refugee camp. Mayweather was born and raised in space.

Also Chocatay and Torres came from planets in the would be DMZ someday and Worf spent part of his youth on a farming colony world. Plus Data was made in a earth colony world that was also mostly about farming. Plus I get the impression that LaForge grew up on Starfleet ships and bases.

Worf's a bit of an anomaly. He spent some time on Earth (Minsk, camping in the Urals), but he appears to have been raised on a colony world (Gault) as well. His first five years may have even been spent in the Khitomer Colony, although he appears to have been born on Qo'noS.

Tuvok is from the "Vulcanis Lunar Colony", but the jury is out as to whether that is a moon colony in the Vulcan system (probably the intention) or a colony on Luna (probably just fun fanon).

Ro was born on Bajor, per her personnel file, even if she sion after left for the refugee camps.

Crusher was born on Luna and spent a good time on Arvada III and Caldos, but described herself as being from North America one time, so she must've spent some of her youth on Earth.

Jake Sisko was also implied to have been born on the Moon (in New Berlin), even if this was forgotten by the time he said he never went to the Moon. He spent most of his life on starships and probably Mars before settling down on DS9. This is in stark contrast to his grandfather Joseph who never left Earth until he was 64 years old.

Seven of Nine, of course, was born on the Tendara Colony, and explicitly never went to Earth until... presumably after the credits in Endgame.

Geordi comes from Mogadishu, but he was a Starfleet brat who probably spent less than a fortnight there.

Even Kirk, who was "from Iowa, but worked in Outer Space" probably spent much of his canonical youth on starships with his Starfleet parents. In contrast to his Kelvin version who was born in space but grew up in Iowa.

I have a vague recollection that Uhura was said to have been born in the "United States of Africa". I suspect that was apocryphal, though.

Around the time he was 13 he was living on Tarsus IV so we can assume either George and Winona Kirk had a Starfleet posting at the colony and they weren't on the surface when Governor Kodos ordered the executions or they had left him there in the care of a trusted loved one while they were off doing something they felt was too dangerous for their teenage son.
