Spiritual beliefs in Star Trek run into reality problems.

By which I mean they've proven that certain spiritual beliefs have substance to them that causes measurable effects while other spiritual beliefs do not.

Also that the one true god at the end of everything is a Koala.
It's s woman in a hijab, not an deep dive into spiritual beliefs. We saw hijabs on Lower Decks too.

Lura Thok's blood looked white. In DS9 Jem'Hadar blood was amber in color, but we can probably chalk the changes up to her being half-Klingon.
I wondered about the same thing but also figured that it was due to whatever was done to the Jem'Hadar to make them able to breed. I wouldn't be remotely surprised if the thinking was "now that they don't need The White, their blood is white."

It's possible, though the script comes right out and says Betazoids are empaths, but not telepaths. And Tarima's dialogue talks about empathic skill only among her race.

I really think they just retconned the race, but maybe there's some Burn-related technobabble for why they lost their abilities.

Seems like, based upon the little bit from the trailers, Tarima is going to have some weird superhero-like ability ultimately.
Maybe after 900+ years of being around humans they are mostly all part-human now.

Why does that matter? We saw references to multiple Earth and alien beliefs, even with Vulcans. Cultures persist.

Also this.

i swear they could have set this show immediately in the aftermath of Picard, with Patrick Stewart cameos and all; and the haters still would have hated it. Nothing will ever make them happy
Then why waste time and energy talking about them? Just erase them from your list of concerns. :)

It was red in DS9.

It was described as amber in one of the post-series novels however. Maybe that’s what you saw being referenced

When Caleb said "Look out, there's a Borg!" I wonder if that was a hint that even though the Picard series finale implied that the Borg threat was pretty much gone by the end of that episode, they somehow became a threat again after Picard. Like maybe 500 years later or something?

Perhaps the enzyme the Jem'Hadar required from ketracel white was not so easily removed from their genetic structure so they were made capable of producing it on their own and given a ketracel organ and this genetic engineering resulted in their blood turning white.

Maybe for some reason the Dominion stopped producing it, and Jurassic Park-style, life found a way of doing just as you say, as well as causing biological sex shifting.

As opposed to my merely liking episode 1, comes my adoration for this episode. It is a nearly perfect piece of Trek which includes some moving personal connection to the story, a reconciliation with hard graft for an old Federation member...continuing Discovery's fantastic storyline of UFP reformation, and dammit, every character is interesting. Ok, Academy, I'm officially a fan now.

As much as I loved Discovery, this show has a look to it that feels like a maturation of the style, and they spent a lot of money getting that look through. It's colorful, detailed and sumptuous.

Who needs a villain?? This was so great.

10 out of 10!!

I wonder if they're going to go with this the way I think it's going to go, if they use an allegory.

"Make Betazed Great Again!"

Don't tell me.
Yes, but no. I'll use a Spoiler Box.

Earth was isolationist but that's where it stopped. They were just self-sufficient. And they had a conflict going on with Titan. They could've made Earth a lot worse, like outright xenophobic, but they didn't go there. They didn't go all the way. I think they could take Batezed to another level. Which would make for a fitting allegory considering how much worse everything is this second time around IRL.

Of course, I'm talking in the dark and speculating out loud, since we don't know where they're actually going to go with this yet.
Yes, they used this story before, but why not, it hasn't stopped on Earth today. It's always topical if they use the same story from TOS on TNG or Picard, if it hasn't been solved yet.

They do one thing in the episode that shocked me...a concession that brings everyone together in a profound way. I was moved.

I really liked this episode, better than the pilot. We got some nice slice of life moments that show us what it is like to be at starfleet academy. But my favorite part was the negotiation with Betazed. We got lots of fascinating world-building as well as some genuinely interesting diplomacy. I was captivated every time Vance and the Betazed president were arguing their points of view. The moment in the end when Vance says the seat of government for the Federation will be on Betazed and everyone stands up, was really moving.

The budding relationship between Caleb and the Betazed princess were charming and worked well as a mirror to the issues between Betazed and the Federation. I especially liked the scene with the whales.

The episode also had a lot of fun memberberries. It was great to see the Doctor sing (a nice callback to Voyager).

I do think the adult characters are probably the most interesting. Caleb is a bit annoying in some scenes as the stereotypical "genius/rebel". But I feel like he will grow. His character arc is clearly to go from the outsider/rebel to become an integrated member of Starfleet. So I suspect we will see him "become more starfleet" as the show progresses. The other cadets are probably the weakest part of the show. They feel like generic "high school students" in the background. But I am sure we will get more episodes that focus on them and fill in their backstories.

I do think the strength of the show is in the world-building. Hopefully, they steer away from too much "high school drama" type plots.
