It is a crime to border hop and get genetic engineering work done, as seen in DS9.
I'm surprised they'd be fine with the Illyrians just hanging out somewhere on the edge of Federation space then. The crime of their existence makes them seem worse than the Klingons, the Romulans, and the Orions combined.

I feel like I'm nitpicking, but I just wish the story was either more specific to to cover these details or more generic and didn't leave room for my brain to think about this stupid stuff. lol

Better than being forgettable.

Physical attractiveness is, like it or not, a major genetic benefit in getting ahead in life in today's world and we haven't seen much to contradict this even in Trek's world.

I'm curious if the Fed bans against genetic modifications would still be taken seriously against someone who had no physical or mental augmentations, but only had their DNA altered so that they're incredibly good looking.

For example, if D'Vana Tendi or Gaila is revealed that she has genetic modifications that make her stunningly beautiful, and that this is in fact a cultural practice for all Orion women, explaining why they are so irresistible to men, would she be court martialed and thrown out of Starfleet too?

Yes.

I mean, consider being a parent like 50 years from now. You are told that your child will be trans. What would you do? You could go through things the old-fashioned way, or they could have therapy as a blastocyst so they were born with a body that aligned with their mental gender. I think most parents would opt for this because it would save their children a lot of mental anguish during childhood and adolescence

Interesting you picked that solution. What if it turns out that it's much simpler to modify the brain to match the body?

Far better episode than last week - This is Trek at it's finest when it's going head to head with cultural conflict and discrimination.

Robert April is a coward who didn't have the nerve to say he would of been forced because of the law to deny her career but that law is wrong.

Picard, Kirk and Sisko would of said so.

"anti-woke" group will use this episode as yet more evidence of how modern Star Trek has deviated from classic Trek and as more evidence of Hollywood preaching to the masses.

Screw the Anti woke group - They are morons who don't understand "that" Classic Star Trek was "woke" as fuck.

There's an episode of Deep Space Nine where Bajor flirts with the idea of switching to a caste system, which violates Federation law. The Bajorans are told that their application for admittance to the Federation would be doomed by such a move. It's implied that the Federation would just move on and let the Bajorans follow whatever lifestyle or policy they wanted, but it would be done without Federation protection.

My guess is that for someone traveling to Illyrian space it would be similar to today when someone travels to a place known for being a hotbed for certain illegal things (i.e., terrorism, sex trafficking, etc.). Their names would be flagged and their movements and dealings would get extra suspicion.

It was ok, but honestly didn’t excite me too much. I’ve never been a fan of Trek’s dalliances into legal procedurals , complete with the unbelievably witty and clever guest-star defense attorney.

Good performances all around, and some interesting writing at points, but I like Star Trek better when they are out exploring and having adventures.

6.5/10

Second episode in a row that failed to break a whole 7 for me.

Apparently Star Trek was just about space adventures and had nothing to say about any social issues in its entire run ever.
The best episode since sometime last year. Also, I loved the Tellarite makeup. The perfect blend of TOS and ENT styles (TOS three-fingered hands and ENT face without the pronounced tusks).
Awful skinny Tellarite, though.

Took me awhile to recognize Chiv, but it hit me: Eugene Clark! He was Detective Colby Burns in one of my favorite TV cop shows, Night Heat.

Eugene Clark! (snaps fingers)

I knew I recognized him! From TEKWAR as Sid Gomez, Cardigan's partner.

Thank you for putting the name to the face, because it hit me exactly when I read your post.

Only was able to get through 13 pages or so, and I can't keep going, so if I am repeating anything, my apologies.

Great episode! The franchise almost always does courtroom episodes well, and this was no exception.

I gave this one a 9. I was leaning toward a 10, but we already knew she would be back in uniform and no real difference was going to occur with the augmentation laws.

I did like Neera's solution of using the asylum law to free Una of the charges. That was clever.

I liked the Tellarite makeup here.

Pike is a fantastic captain. He's right behind Sisko to me. (I don't think anyone will ever be able to knock The Sisko off the top spot of STAR TREK captains for me, but Pike is definitely a very strong contender for the second favorite slot.)

This show is firing on all cylinders. Keep it up, SNW!
