I just recently got into SNW and I enjoyed both the first and second episodes but also the situation with the Augments and Synths (Picard) really does show despite being a Utopia the Federation does still have its prejudices. I do like how this is a continuing discussion because to be a Utopia, I think its ideas and beliefs always have to be challenged so they won't be complacent.

Better than being forgettable.
This is 100% true. I mean I rated the episode 8 and these two episodes have done more for me than all of Picard S3. lol
I've watched both episodes like three or four times already.

There's an episode of Deep Space Nine where Bajor flirts with the idea of switching to a caste system, which violates Federation law. The Bajorans are told that their application for admittance to the Federation would be doomed by such a move. It's implied that the Federation would just move on and let the Bajorans follow whatever lifestyle or policy they wanted, but it would be done without Federation protection.

My guess is that for someone traveling to Illyrian space it would be similar to today when someone travels to a place known for being a hotbed for certain illegal things (i.e., terrorism, sex trafficking, etc.). Their names would be flagged and their movements and dealings would get extra suspicion.
Yeah, the idea of "sex tourism" exists (in its various legalities) but it's kind of not clear what it means for something on a galactic scale. It would be like if there was a United Earth government but a single country decided not to join. It's also not clear if the idea of 'sanctions' exist and if Illyria would be considered Cuba or Iran or North Korea (to use a USA-centric view of the world).
But also the influence of the Federation seems to shift depending on what's convenient for the writers at the time, which, fair enough.

Well we know the Federation has been embargoing Romulan Ale (i.e., the Star Trek universe's equivalent of Cuban cigars) from at least the late 23rd century to the late 24th.

Free movement and trade is something that can't exist when there's a giant massive border that crossing is grounds for war.

Third parties.

Hell, even the Klingons have had trade with the Romulans from time to time, who have had a relatively open border with the Romulans post Khitomer.

The same unsatisfying ending we got with Data and the EMH. "We're not going to make any real change to anything but we'll allow you to continue because you're a main character and have plot shields."

These are the barriers you run into when you retread old ground in a prequel show and the studio claims it is set in the prime 'verse. Sorta hamstrings ya.

I'm not sure I get it. Illyrians who cease to use genetic modification are no longer Illyrians. So what are they?

Also, Illyrians have DNA. If these alterations are genetic, by their very nature, they would show in DNA as mutations. Una's parents would not take her to hospital because her modifications would be revealed. How has she managed to avoid providing blood and genetic data to her CMOs throughout her career? Even if she's never ill, she would still be required to submit to regular medical checks?

Yes. See: Sarek. Both of his sons know it. Sarek can't even embrace Spock's humanity even though he is the author of it.
Not to mention that Sarek himself has a fetish for human women. He married Amanda Grayson, had a half human half Vulcan child; and then after Amanda passed, he married another human woman named Perrin.

Admiral Robert April: So, Captain Galia, you know what Romulans look like, dealing with them all the time. How much do you want for that information?

Orion Captain Galia: Well dear, I'd be happy to tell you all about them for free if you keep me company tonight and--

(Sarah April walks by, glaring at Robert and Galia menacingly)

Admiral April: I'm going to have to decline.

I What happened to the 10 or 12 year old Illyrian boy who was arrested with his family? If they sent a child to a penal colony, the Federation is monstrous. If the family was fined and the kid barred from Starfleet Academy but they are otherwise free to go about their lives, maybe not.

This part of the episode annoyed me the most. The Federation shouldn't even begin to think about putting children in prisons and penal colonies. The authors have gone too far here.

I understand completely. I figured they were calling our attention to similar circumstances here in the US with migrant children in fucking cages. I assumed from context (as with the US) it was a local government response and interpretation of law that was generally reviled in the rest of the civilized world.

According to her personnel file in #StarTrekSNW's "Ad Astra Per Aspera", Commander Una Chin-Riley previously served on the USS Martin Luther King jr., the USS Antares and the USS Chantelet. One previous ship she served on is "redacted".

#StarTrekSNW's season 1's monochrome ready room paintings of the USS Essex ↙️ and Enterprise NX-01 ↘️ have been replaced by colourful paintings of the Enterprise NX-01 (changing places) ↖️ and the Phoenix ↗️ for season 2 of the show, as seen in "Ad Astra Per Aspera".

RE: The redressed Starfleet HQ Set

True, but much more than a redress… new design, construction, paint, lighting, backdrops, etc… it was one of our most challenging sets so far and one which took our team many weeks… and of course we had to put it back the way it was too!

Whiny Bullshit.

Asylum?

#### off.

You get asylum by asking for it, not by retroactively qualifying that you deserved it a year ago, and then laying out a puzzle where your legal counsel figures out what you've up to for the last 6 months.
The lawyer gave the tribunal an out and they took it. Not exactly a difficult concept

The redacted ship may be the U.S.S. Archer from the Kiley 279 mission in the series premiere. She and just two other officers were assigned to the Archer but she was the ranking officer in command of the mission.

It's the USS Discovery (the ship with the Spore Drive which no one involved is supposed to talk about.) Both she and Pike served on the ship for short periods in STD S2.
