Mostly for the gag but also maybe a signal to the audience that Captain Kirk will come on the show at some point.
My guess is the character is there specifically for his the Jim Kirk episode next season. It does open up the question of why introduce him so early if you're doing that but it does feel much more natural to have him there since the start than having him introduced right before Jim appears.
And hey his appearences so far have been good so I have no issue there.

It'd be fun to watch you guys play M*A*S*H trivia with my hubby, who's also a huge fan. I'm curious how well the eps hold up though.
The earlier episodes are more funny. The Henry/Trapper loss to Potter/Honeycutt marked the first shift in tone of the show to something with some greater depth. Then when Burns left and was replaced with Winchester, the show completed its final move into the more dramatic era. It was more a show about Viet Nam than Korea.
More recently, there was a show on the Paramount channel (regular cable, not P+) called “68 Whiskey” that tried to be a modern take on MASH. The acting was a bit uneven, but it had the spark of something quite interesting before it was cancelled after only 1 season.

I love MASH and my wife and I watch it most evenings. We enjoy the simple episodes and find them to be a good way to unwind.
As far as episodes holding up for me it depends on the episode. Early Hawkeye was far more of a prankster, an even a prop comic at times, using a Sherlock outfit, and Gorilla costumes with Trapper.
As the show continued on you definitely see the more dramatic side, with the comedy, and how different perspectives on the war could come about. Hawkeye, while not infallible, definitely became more fallible as the seasons wore on. Which, in my opinion, is to the show's credit because you can see some character growth despite the episodic format.
More amusing is trying to keep track of individual's referring to family members from season to season.
I agree and they definitely had a bit of a slapstick edge while later ones utilized more in situation comedy. It definitely takes on a different flavor.
I've enjoyed the ten episodes of Season 1... but it's been a mixed bag still. Several very good episodes, a couple of disappointing ones, the rest is good... but still I can't quite get excited by it, despite liking all the characters and the excellent design work done on the show. Don't know why yet. So far, it's not a BluRay purchase for me.

I have to say on the whole I really enjoyed the entire season. Yeah im a visual continuty freak but a good story is a good story. Things I enjoyed the most. The Spock/Chapel interactions. Not sure how theyll explain in canon but its possible as Spock got more control over his emotions he started to focus on career only and left tpring hanging one time too mamy and started to move away from chapels friendship or they were still friends but we didnt see it. Not sure but im still enjoying it. I really like pike he isnt perfect but no captain is. I enjly his cooking for the bridge crew abd that he still loves antique tvs like the tube tv he had in the cage and the plasma he had in his home on earth. Nice call back to his love of old tech. We need to see more erica. Also Hemmer died too soon. I wish he would have gotten his own ep before they offed him. Really nice to get 1 hour stories. Real nice.

This does add context to Spock and Chapel having their moment in "The Naked Time(TOS)." Psi 2000 virus infections or not, Christine knows he's still betrothed to T'Pring and thus still unreachable, whatever flings he'd had in the recent past notwithstanding.

Lower Decks is bloody amazing though. You're really missing out, it isn't a kids show.
I have seen the first 2 seasons of LD and I am not a big fan. It is entertaining but the pace is too hectic, the characters speak too loud and too fast (probably normal for comedy cartoons) and the main character is way too annoying. Once I sign up again I will catch up, but I am not going to subscribe just for Lower Decks or Prodigy.
Good point. I wouldnt be disappointed if we get a older chapel and spock circa 2292 and find that Chapel becomes Spocks first wife. So a few years from now we can get a update of sorts.

That's ok. I've cancelled my Crave.tv subscription as well. I'll wait next year to catch up with everything.
