Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

And I repeat The Orville isn't Star Trek.

You are completely right. Can't be to careful. CBS has done so many police procedural's they must know all about investigations and sniffing out the truth and if that is case then The Orville folks could get into lots of trouble. They might even force Seth to do a JAG reboot or else. We can't lets his talents be wasted on such a project.

The

Henry Alonso Myers gets what I want out of Star Trek:

“I love genre storytelling, but when it skimps on character, it just never works, and when it delivers on character, it makes everything work,” Myers says. “We get to relish the downtime moments. It’s the comforting part of television that you don’t always get out of movies. If we focus on character, the action will feel like it has more stakes, the romance will feel like it actually matters, and the humor will be funnier, because it’s coming from people that we know and like to hang out with. I think that that’s the thing that we’ve gotten to do a little more than other [‘Trek’] shows.”

All of it is spot on, but especially the comment about the importance of “people that we know and like to hang out with.” That’s from this great interview with Variety, which includes minor spoilers for how they’re handling Kirk in season 2:

Orville isn't even that good this season.

I disagree. I have loved every episode and it has maybe it's best ever episode as well. Strange New Worlds of course was good as well, also with no clunkers but not quite a good as The Orville just yet. Mount though is a way better actor than McFarlande.

Anyone have thoughts on why the showrunners decided to put Sam Kirk in this show? Was it all just for the fake out in the pilot episode (which was kind of spoiled by the leak/announcement that James would be appearing in season 2).

They don't seem to have any focus for him in season 1. He could have just been any old Lieutenant. Outside of Sam giving some info on James in "A Quality of Mercy", he doesn't do anything that needs him to be Kirk. And even then, they could have had any of the other non-Spock/non-Uhura characters serve with Kirk on an earlier ship to give the same "briefing" to Pike. And wouldn't you think that James's brother is going to give you a less-objective readout than practically anyone else - for good or for bad?

I guess it was just all for that one gag in episode 1...

Sure sounds like a TOS continuation is at least in some sort of planning stage.

I would still say SNW is better. But The Orville has been very good. I’m always curious as to how many people that trash The Orville have actually watched more than one episode (if that). Or if they just immediately dismissed it “Family Guy Star Trek ripoff” and passed.

I very much prefer it to the first two seasons of Discovery.

I’ve always thought it was just for the gag. And for that kinda dumb scene with him and Pike in the finale.

I watched somewhere between 1.5 and 2 seasons of Orville before giving it up. When they had an episode that was about 99% a copy of previous Trek episodes, such that I could predict everything that was going to happen in the rest of the episode, I kind of gave up. It didn't help that I hated Norm Macdonald's character (though I love Norm) and thought Penny Johnson Jerald's acting had just gone down hill (maybe she was getting terrible directing advice?).

Being better than any period of Discovery is not a high bar.

Re: Sam Kirk. I wonder, if they did what they wanted to do with Sam in season 1, will he be back for season 2? With all the characters, several of which are main characters who could use much more screen time, I wonder if he will just fade into the background.

Made it to episode 3 of Season 2. Thanks for asking :techman:

Sadly, MASH has become an underappreciated masterpiece. One of my all-time favorite shows.
Indeed. One of my favorite shows of all time and Colonel Potter's quotes are among my favorites. The "queasy gizzard" was a straight quote from the episode "Back Pay." Also features one of my favorite lines from Potter in regards to Hawkeye and Winchester: "Well, in case Hawkeye does go loco I'll make sure Winchester's back is on the mend. At least it's just his spine that's twisted not his brain."

 Love it!

I just got the entire set and plan to rewatch it all very soon. It's been a while! It'll be great to revisit the good ol' 4077th!
