I'd say any series of regional wars in the 1990s that killed about 37 million people will be remembered and taught two or three hundred years later. That's not exactly the death toll from a private plane accident.

I learned about a variety of wars, and did some small reennactments even in class. I still remember the War of the Roses, House of Lancaster and the House of York, Spanish-American War, Hannibal, Punic Wars, amongst others.

Most of my knowledge of the brutal colonialism perpetrated by the British Empire and the British East India company came from watching the PotC films and wanting to know more about the history it was set in.
Terry Pratchett wrote an adorable book set in the Colonial period which completely hides just how awful British colonialism was.

These are 2 different opinions you're giving.
Hitler is still referenced frequently enough with regards to right-wing politics that the general population hasn't forgotten. But who references Hirohito, by name, in public discourse? Next to no one.
It doesn't look like we're going to outgrow the whitewashing of history in public schools anytime soon, either.
