I didn't know about the Tulsa Race Massacre in my own country until I was in my forties.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vi...x8x/meet-the-hitlers-matt-ogens-interview-183I would hope that La'an is't actually proud of being Khan's descendant. Is she some kind of Augment apologist? 'Khan Lives Matter'?
If you walk around with the same name as a bloodthirsty tyrant? You should see it coming.
No, but you can blame her parents for not changing the name.![]()
I learned about a variety of wars, and did some small reennactments even in class. I still remember the War of the Roses, House of Lancaster and the House of York, Spanish-American War, Hannibal, Punic Wars, amongst others.Sure they did. All starfleet officers and academy graduates.
But what about kids growing up in grade school?
So not to derail the conversation too much, but I'm seriously in love with the leather landing party jackets in this episode! I'm trying to find commercially available replicas for cosplay, but I'm not having much luck. I did find a website called The Leatherz that sells movie and TV replica jackets, and they have a Strange New Worlds leather jacket for sale, but there are no item images, just stills from the episode. I may be wrong but that just seems kinda sketchy. I was wondering if anyone knew whether they were a reputable company? Here's the link to the site where they are sold: https://theleatherz.com/product/star-trek-strange-new-worlds-leather-jacket/
I like them a lot as well. I don’t think they are available officially yet but I’m sure it won’t be long.
Everybody learns about WWI and II, and the holocaust, but how many curriculum give any breathing room to Vietnam (800,000-1.15 million deaths)I'd say any series of regional wars in the 1990s that killed about 37 million people will be remembered and taught two or three hundred years later. That's not exactly the death toll from a private plane accident.
I doubt La'an's people, other than Khan, were on the Botany Bay or Ceti Alpha. Most likely left behind to face judgement,Khan probably never even met his kids. He definitely wouldn't put up with little rugrats toddling around the house.
And the disaster at Ceti Alpha happened only six months after the group was left there. One would think it impossible to raise a family in that kind of environment.
The show just started airing, I wouldn't expect they have any made yet to show off.Any chance that place makes everything "to order"? I mean, they should still have some examples of their work. I'd wait till there are a couple reviews of the jacket.
Familiarity with names is inconsistent. Every American knows of Hitler, but hardly anyone could name the Emperor of Japan in WW2, or his top military man.Okay, okay.
I concede the point on this one: better educated 23rd Century kids know all about the history of Noonien-Singh and the Eugenics wars.
Rotten little bullying bastards!![]()
Maybe she should change her name to Soong. You know, it just hit me: If La'an was bullied for being Khan's descendant...why theddin't she change her name?
I mean, if somebody walks around today with a last name like Hitler or bin Laden, they're gonna catch hell for it....
I think you'll find many who do indeed know of:Familiarity with names is inconsistent. Every American knows of Hitler, but hardly anyone could name the Emperor of Japan in WW2, or his top military man.
But proportionally?I think you'll find many who do indeed know of:
Hirohito and Tojo
and Stalin as well.
italy here, we did Vietnam in school but only very in passing, no mention at all of the other conflicts you mention.Everybody learns about WWI and II, and the holocaust, but how many curriculum give any breathing room to Vietnam (800,000-1.15 million deaths)
? Or Korea (3.4 million)? or Kuwait (200,000)?
I was in high school in the 90's and I doubt any single class gave any mention to the Rwandan Genocide. (500,00 - 1 million)
Well done.I think you'll find many who do indeed know of:
Hirohito and Tojo
and Stalin as well.
To be honest I'd like to know if those people who couldn't also named Hirohito and Tojo would in fact also be able to recall who Adolph Hitler was and what he's known for.Well done. Now ask 10 people in the street. I'd bet that, at most, 10% would be able to name the Emperor and his top general, as you've done. And that's a generous estimate. Proportionally, there's a significant gap between knowing of Hitler and knowing of Hirohito.
Now, come on. Hitler is one of the best-known humans in history, for people today. Of course more people would know his name.To be honest I'd like to know if those people who couldn't also named Hirohito and Tojo would in fact also be able to recall who Adolph Hitler was and what he's known for.

These are 2 different opinions you're giving. To be honest I'd like to know if those people who couldn't also named Hirohito and Tojo would in fact also be able to recall who Adolph Hitler was and what he's known for. If there's one constant in the population of the masses, it's that people are stupid; and most don't even bother to research anything past what they need to know for their day to day existence.
It doesn't look like we're going to outgrow the whitewashing of history in public schools anytime soon, either.I didn't know about the Tulsa Race Massacre in my own country until I was in my forties.
