I've only seen three episodes of SNW, but I've seen three distinct stories. I've also seen twenty episodes of PIC and 40+ episodes of DSC, but I've only seen a total of six stories of those shows, and I much prefer the three stories of SNW to the six stories of the others. So I think there's enough, just from a story basis to make a comparison.

Exactly. In three episodes we got 3 whole stories that were actually pretty good. 6 seasons of STD and STP we got a measly 6 stories. The 3 stores in SNW were far superior to the other 6. It goes to show that sometimes less is more.

:bolian: TI don't agree with that assessment. There have definitely been times when the Federation did dumb or prejudicial stuff, but there have also been plenty of times it hasn't. It was Michael whose prejudice helped ignite the Federation-Klingon War in S1, for instance; Federation principles might have avoided conflict if Michael hadn't attacked the Torchbearer. .
Technically Michael didn't attack the torchbearer, she did cause his death, but it wasn't an attack. She was trying to flee and her suit pushed his weapon into his own body.

That isn't what caused the Federation Klingon war. Michael didn't attack the torchbearer, she did cause his death but it wasn't an attack, she was trying to flee and her suit's forward motion pushed the weapon he had attacked her with into his own body.

The episode goes to the point that the Klingons were going to attack because the Federations peaceful ways were a direct threat to their way of life. The call to war was "We come in peace".

Thats the whole point of the Vulcan Hello, that only treating the Klingons with a response that is true to their culture is meet with respect. A peaceful one, is a going to push them into action.

Later after the battle at the Binary star, the thought was lets capture T'Kuma (sp...), so that he's not seen as a valid leader or martyr to a continued conflict with the Federation.

She instead kills him after her Captain is killed by him. Now what isn't clear is did she deliberately change her phaser setting from tun to kill? Because we don't see t. Or did that setting get changed when the phaser was tossed aside, or when she picked it up in hurray. But dead he is, and now a martyr to the cause.

So not to derail the conversation too much, but I'm seriously in love with the leather landing party jackets in this episode! I'm trying to find commercially available replicas for cosplay, but I'm not having much luck. I did find a website called The Leatherz that sells movie and TV replica jackets, and they have a Strange New Worlds leather jacket for sale, but there are no item images, just stills from the episode. I may be wrong but that just seems kinda sketchy. I was wondering if anyone knew whether they were a reputable company? Here's the link to the site where they are sold: https://theleatherz.com/product/star-trek-strange-new-worlds-leather-jacket/

Well, for myself I wouldn't say the 3 we got from SNW are better, but it's a lot more fun to have self-contained stories every time rather than have a season-long plot with either filler or forced twists. DSC seasons 3 and 4, and PIC, for me have been pretty good, despite some serious flaws, but I wouldn't necessarily fall them "fun".

I like them a lot as well. I don’t think they are available officially yet but I’m sure it won’t be long.

DSC could have easily had those self contained episodes too. The Mudd episode, Eden, the one with the comet eggs, prison planet, slave planet, others I can't think of. A tiny rewrite and they are self contained and we're good stories when taken in isolation.

Watched this again - definitely preferred it a second time round with my partner. She is enjoying SNW and thinks it's the best NuTrek by far (she liked Voyager; stopped watching Disco/Picard after their first seasons).

I am under orders to stop being a grouch - she thinks I'm being too hard and just looking for problems. She's right of course. :D

Episodic can be fun, but serialized can be more rewarding, especially with modern viewing habits. It's a big part of the reason DS9 has the fanbase it does now, but outside of Star Trek its the main reason so much of television has moved the direction it has.

Star Trek would benefit from the balance I think SNW is working with, you have episodic stories (occasional 2 and 3 parters being welcome), with serialized character arcs. Far from the first to do it of course, but they are doing it well and I'm very hopeful for the future.

I think the Star Trek serialized shows can benefit come look at the style of say, Buffy the Vampire Slayer season arc's. There would always be a single storyline with escalating threats so the story wouldn't drag. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 had a very similar structure as well, with separate stories pods involving Ghost Rider, LMD's, and the framework with the darkhold being the string that tied them all together.

I agree in general. The downside for me is that, rewatching episodic series is far less commital, as you can watch any number of episodes in any order. For serialised shows, and for this reason, I prefer them a bit shorter rather than a multi-season story, which tends to drag on. DS9 was special, with mostly independant episodes attached to a snowballing main story.

You know, it just hit me: If La'an was bullied for being Khan's descendant...why the :censored: ddin't she change her name?

I mean, if somebody walks around today with a last name like Hitler or bin Laden, they're gonna catch hell for it....

I was bullied for my hair colour but I didn't dye my hair as a consequence. :)

That's different. People shouldn't expect to be bullied because of things like hair color.

Names, OTOH? If La'an walks around sharing the surname of a murderous dictator and doesn't pick up on the fact that there just might be people who don't like that...it's on her. Like I said, it'd be like somebody having the name Hitler and not bothering to change it.

Khan probably never even met his kids. He definitely wouldn't put up with little rugrats toddling around the house.

And the disaster at Ceti Alpha happened only six months after the group was left there. One would think it impossible to raise a family in that kind of environment.
