Kirk was an Admiral who was Starfleet Chief of Operations. Within thirteen years he was a Captain again and once again answering to every flag officer in San Francisco. That was an interesting story.

Considering the alternative was court martial and spending the rest of his life in prison for violating every Starfleet order, I think everything worked out.

In that case if Boyce is in SNW, they need to take efforts to make him his own character and not just a McCoy clone.

Boyce or Piper would be a very pleasant addition to the SNW cast. I hope we get the former and would happily take the latter.

I think I'd prefer Boyce (played by John Slattery, of course). Piper just seemed like a grouch. He definitely didn't seem as close a friend to Pike, if at all, like Boyce was.

Exactly. Telling a good story is all that is required. What ends up happening with all the nods and references is a meal made entirely out of garlic, rather than using the garlic to flavor the meal.

Boyce and Pike seemed like close friends so it seems they would want to explore that in some fashion. Also it makes sense to me that if he has told anyone about his glimpse into the future it was likely Boyce.

I don't think Pike would tell anyone for fear of contaminating the timeline.

I really don't need either one. They need to push in new directions. Give me a doctor who is an explorer first and a medic second, someone with maybe some questionable medical ethics for the crew to push back against. Maybe someone like Toby Russell from TNG's "Ethics" but interesting.

In fairness, either doctor from the TOS pilots is pretty much a blank slate. Even if the people making SNW decide to check a box and include one of the two by name, they have the option at least of making him anything they want him to be. Just as long as they don't make Boyce a teetotaler.

I don't think Piper and Pike ever shared the screen or even a sound stage.
