Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Only question is why would he go from CMO to just working under Bones many years later. Seems like a demotion.

Chief O'Brien bounced ranks so often I don't know how he didn't get whiplash from switching out NCO and commissioned officer pips.

The Chief did though have some command duties on TNG. I believe he was in charge of all the transporter operators. So when he went to DS9 he already had experience being a leader of sorts.

Kirk was an Admiral who was Starfleet Chief of Operations. Within thirteen years he was a Captain again and once again answering to every flag officer in San Francisco. That was an interesting story.

Are we talking about Dr. M'Benga now without even getting into what happened to Boyce and Piper? I'd imagine Boyce might have a thing or two to say about what Pike learned on Boreth.

I think I we do need to find out about Boyce. I don't think anyone cares about Piper. He should have had a drink with Kirk or something to make us care about him.

What do we need (emphasis added) to add to this story? Boyce served his role very well but his absence doesn't automatically mean anything other than a transfer or retirement. Piper, likewise, does not mandate an appearance, whether I care about him or not. Does it serve the story is the larger question, not whether or not past character I care about appear in this show.

I care about Pike, but that doesn't automatically mean the story will be good in this show.

Boyce and Pike seemed like close friends so it seems they would want to explore that in some fashion. Also it makes sense to me that if he has told anyone about his glimpse into the future it was likely Boyce.

Boyce: Chris, after I found out about what you learned on Boreth, I take back my recommendation that you stay in Starfleet. Resign now! I already booked a one way trip for you to Orion. This isn't a request, it's doctor's orders.

Based upon what exactly? The general impression I get is that they want Pike as the grounding point and the rest to be newer cast members and crew. Now, I could be wrong, and certainly if Boyce showing up makes sense in the story being told then I'm all for it. But Boyce doesn't get grandfathered in because he was in "The Cage" and offered Pike a martini. That doesn't past muster in my book.

Well they don't have to use him. More accurate to say they should use him. Maybe pepper the other Cage and Comic Book characters later in cameos or references. Boyce IMO though is the only one with real story potential. Well him and Vina and the Talosians at some point.
