Unfortunately, I have seen similar shit on ALL of the other Trek shows. If I could count the number of fist fights that William Shatner had to fake on "Star Trek", I think I would have fallen asleep before I could finish.

I don't mind action in any Trek show or movie . . . as long as it's not overdone or that it overshadows the drama. My problem with the Season 2 premiere wasn't the action. My problem was the awkward tonal shift and the presence of one Christopher Pike. I would not have minded if he and Spock were merely recurring characters. But I don't see the need for him as regular on this show, considering that his character is the commanding officer of another ship.

On the Star Trek subreddit, the 'Brother' episode discussion thread is an interesting read. The vast majority of reactions yesterday seemed to be really positive. And this is a subreddit which has had plenty of DSC naysayers commenting on what they dislike about the new show.

I suspect that the RT score has been brigaded to hell and back. It happened in S1 too. It seems to happen frequently to certain franchises, especially those which try something new or try to increase diversity/representation in their casting. Let's just say it's kinda obvious when you look at the broader patterns.

My opinion only, of course.

A lot of them cared enough to actually write reviews, so who knows..

I would give the episode a 7.5, but take away the stunning visuals, the adrenaline fuelled action and you don't have much left. There were some nice some nice character moments, but then you have Tilly being OTT and Burnham doing her take on Wesley Crusher.

I'm optimistic about how they've set things up for the rest of the season, but this won't be an episode I'll be rushing to watch again.

Are you kidding me? Someone who is enthusiastic, curious, friendly, technically competent, but a little bit awkward and you think people in general would freak out? She would be put on a leadership track in most large companies.

Just like last season I have to watch it twice to really appreciate it. I watched it last night when it dropped. Agonized over the new tone, direction, feel of the 2nd season all day. Watched it the second time tonight and like it much better. Initially gave it a 7 but it goes to a solid 8 or 9 on repeat viewing. Still amazed at the sfx they are putting in this show. It’s a beauty to behold. Pike and Reno are interesting people that can carry some good stories. Not sure I’m that interested in Spock and the red angel yet. We shall see. Again so thankful to have Trek back on!!! Happy new year all.

Seriously what was even the plot and themes of this episode? It was "There were red lights across the galaxy (just completely forget the concept of the speed of light), go check one out, go to asteroid, leave asteroid" that was it, there was nothing else really at all. What choices did the characters have to make? What was the moral or sci-fi concept explored?

"Brother" absolutely had an important message, and it was, "Our show is doing a major course correction and we know how to have fun." It wasn't meant to be a deep hour of Star Trek so much as a soft reboot for a show still finding its footing. It was much less ugly than the first season, with likeable characters doing Star Trekky things and exhibiting the traditional Trek values the first season mostly just paid lip service to. Up to you to decide if it was enough to buy them more time, but it worked for me.

There were episodes I really liked last season, but the whole Klingon war, mirror universe shenanigans (which admittedly had some fun moments, Captain Killy anyone?), slow dialogue, very very odd plot decisions (IMO), just bogged it down and I was losing interest. The show seems like it has a better grasp on what it wants to be now, and so I'm definitely along for the ride (would have been anyway). I'm hoping for more fun, excitement, great stories, and character growth.

"Bogged down" is a great way to describe much of the first season, I think. This thing needed to move, and it did. I just hope they sustain the momentum.

I unstand the accusation you and the other flame warrior are getting at. I must be all over the TNG message boards saying how much I hate guinan, ENT board about how I hate hoshi sato and in fact I must hate half of the characters in Star Trek. If I had a problem with certain types of people, I wouldn’t be a Star Trek fan, it’s the most diverse series in tv history. Couldn’t it just be I don’t like the character of Michael burnham?. Everyone’s a boogeyman these days it seems....

I certainly don't think your issue with Burnham stems from her racial background, i think it just stems from her being woman. Like I said in an earlier post, your claim that Burnham 'spoke down' to Pike is all in your head, because she never actually did that in the episode. Projecting your own insecurities with strong women, perhaps? Prefer them to keep quite while the man is talking, definitely, but i don't think you're a racist if that helps.

Early days, but the audience score (198 users) on Rotten Tomatoes for season 2 is 38% vs 54% for season 1 (7405 users)

Maybe the new style of the show isn't as popular as it is with the crowd on here.

We have, from memory we see inside the turbolift shaft in TNG's DIsaster, and in Star Trek V, and a moving turbolift in the shaft in DS9's Crossfire.

To be honest i don't think that portion of the fanbase is very big. They are just loud and obnoxious and have too much time on their hands.

No, I haven't. But I work in a job with a command structure. And no one like Tilly would make it through the tests to get into command training.

I found myself thinking the same thing. And I've served with some pretty awkward CO's before. None quite like Tilly, though.

I'm trying to give her a chance this season but, like others have already mentioned, the shift in tone actually appears to've exaggerated the very qualities I did not like about her in the first season.

But, it's early days yet. We'll see.
