I wonder what your real issue with Michael Burnham is. The real one. Don't say "Because they made her Spock's foster sister!" That by itself wouldn't generate this type of reaction.

And what is the REAL reason?. You obviously have the answer...

I like the new character if she stays, a shame she is another human in the crew, maybe they are cutting down on the makeup budget. She would make a good Andorian or grumpy Tellarite

They introduced a Saurian crewmember in the episode, but made it so he couldn't apparently speak decipherable language. Kind of a shame, because I also want to see more non-human crewmembers who can easily take part in the plot.

My only grievance was Connolly's character... he was obviously set up to be killed off from the start and the moment he started playing Commander Contrarian to Burnham, I already knew he'll die then and there. But then again, Star Trek has had these officers who were way too cocky and stubborn for their own good since the beginning.
I agree, and as I mentioned earlier I thought that Pike telling Nhan "Get that red shirt into an EV suit, Nhan. You're with us." was an attempt at intentional misdirection by the writers, trying to make us think Nhan would not be coming home.

Watching it again, love the production, especially the holo drawing and writings. So cool!
As for pissed off Spock junior, yeah this is definitely the Spock who beat up those school kids lol

Feels like this show will now be middle of the ground, action packed, one size fits all Trek. Then Picards show will be more cerebral Trek and Emperor Georgiou /section 31 will be darker Trek, similar to season 1 Discovery.

At least I hope that's how it plays out.

You don't want to admit it because you're smart.

I unstand the accusation you and the other flame warrior are getting at. I must be all over the TNG message boards saying how much I hate guinan, ENT board about how I hate hoshi sato and in fact I must hate half of the characters in Star Trek. If I had a problem with certain types of people, I wouldn’t be a Star Trek fan, it’s the most diverse series in tv history. Couldn’t it just be I don’t like the character of Michael burnham?. Everyone’s a boogeyman these days it seems....

Now there's a thought...
Does the time period when Burnham joins the family occur before or after "YESTERYEAR" (TAS).
We don't see I-Chaya in the house, but I can't remember how old Spock was during that episode.

In TAS in the original timeline I-Chaya was not dead, I think he beat up those kids when he was 7 and he looked older than 7 in this episode.

I have no idea about you personally, not going to throw accusations around without at least reading the exchange (which I haven't, not fully) but I am going to say this:

If you genuinely believe the trek fandom is made up entirely of enlightened, tolerant, progressive people who wouldn't be out of place in a Starfleet uniform you're going to be very disappointed.

Late to the party and doubtful I'm adding much to the conversation. But, I'll start with the good:

- Jett Reno was a highlight. I hope she's not a one off.

- Visual effects for the asteroid sequence were outstanding.

- Pike is okay.

The rest:

- Tilly. Sorry, but you irritate the bejesus out of me (although my partner loves her, so YMMV). I found a few scenes with her reminding me of fucking Gilmore Girls with the unrealistic speed of light dialogue.

- Burnham. I don't find her character compelling enough to justify so much focus on her.

- For an episode that moved without barely taking a breath, not a hell of a lot happened.

- Enterprise science officer was as subtle as a sledgehammer: "Hi everyone - I'm the resident asshole".

- The sneeze. Seriously? Most of the attempts at humor were off.

Overall, I find the attempts at creating depth come off as flat and insincere. Very much a case of style over substance. I think I'm pretty well boned so far as ever being a bona fide fan of the series. I'll keep watching for now and can only hope it might click with me down the track...

SMG apparently approved of Burnham's hair choices, and I don't think she'd lie about that.

I think Nyotarules is of the school of (which I am also part of) that the intent does not need to be racist for the result to be racist. The intent was the tell a story about a human woman who adopted the hairstyle of her Vulcan saviors. This, on its own, is not a problematic or racist when we're trying to tell a story sci-fi story about a human girl in an alien situation. But, when you cast a black woman as that character, it brings up a whole new set of connotations and meaning that wasn't intended, but the result is this: a TV show asked a black woman to not have a black woman's natural hair, during a time in (real world) history that the very subject is touchy. They could have easily not done this, and her entire story would have been 100% exactly the same.

If anything, SMG made a point to say that in the interview for the purpose of quelling anger about it in the first place, much like how in interviews after Culber's death were quick to say they didn't bury any gays. She may even have brought up the point, but was satisfied with the rationalization. I doubt anyone on production intended to do something racist, but thats the problem with pervasive racism...it exists and happens without you even realizing it.
