If they had the tech to pull that off on TV in 1966 or any other decade they would have

No they wouldn't have because it isn't part of the tone of the franchise, Do you honestly believe that we would see Picard flying through an asteroid field in a pod with crew members blowing up around him because they refuse to follow the most basic of fucking orders to visit simply, a ship that crashed months ago with most likely all lives lost on board? Of course not. Discovery is like that because it's written by a guy who didn't even watch or like Star Trek and is considered one of the biggest hack action movie writers in Hollywood.

Not sure why "space jumps" are antithetical to Star Trek.

They're not in theory, the problem is, the entire show's writing is dumb contrived bullshit to just get to a stupid action sequence way out of tone for what the plot calls. They're going to a fucking asteroid to check if there are any survivors on a ship that crashed months ago, yet the entire scene leading up to it, is something you would see from the climax of a giant summer action movie where they have to save the world, for what called a maybe 2/10 level "get in shuttle dodge some asteroids and land on planet" we got a 10,000/10 action scene with ships exploding, people getting splattered on the wind shields of another ship, everyone screaming at eachother while ignoring orders and ego bragging about how cool he is because he beat his college roommate in beer pong or some shit possibly the most ridiculously implausible sequence I've near ever seen on a TV show with the eject catch. What the fuck?

This is just stupid summer block buster action schlock written by idiots who don't understand about building tone, pacing or anything. On top of that, seriously "LOL THE BODY IS JUST A MACHINE LOL KEK LOL" Yeah, okay, next time Kurtzman is in hospital for a operation, lets just get a car mechanic "THE BODY IS JUST A MACHINE KEK" or the tacked on asteroid sequence "DA POWAH OF MATH PEOPLE JUST IGNORE A COMPUTER DID EVERYTHING CLAP BECAUSE WE THINK OUR FANS ARE ALL PRETENTIOUS STEMLORDS WHO JERK OFF TO COSMOS".

There was nothing at all of substance in this entire episode. It was just action setpiece to dumb contrived bullshit to action setpiece.

[QUOTE Gene Roddenberry]Build your episode on an action-adventure frame- work.

Ah yes, because the "Action adventure" in TOS or TNG, is anything like JJTrek or Discovery. Again, point to all those massive cranked up to 10,000 action sequences in any other Star Trek TV show.

Vulcans? They were in every episode. The ears were pretty sweet.

how many vulcans vs how many klingons - all that mostly one vulcan needed was a set of (rather expensive) ears and a haircut - guess why all those romulans (same ears) wore helmets in ballance of terror

They must have Time Lord science then. :)
The same goes for those silly launch shoots those spinning things launched from. Must have been a few miles

Fans bitched and moaned about DSC not being "fun enuff" And roller coasters are pretty fucking fun. So there you have it. Instant fun.

And the insides are big. Really big.

I didn't find that fun at all. Leave the elevators alone please and save the roller coaster for some place else.

The anti grav generators and inertial dampeners must be working overtime in those wacky lifts. I want to see an episode when they go offline. The ultimate ride.

You know what? All that typing was time well spent. I just changed my mind. You're right. DSC (oops...sorry....STD) sucks balls.

There, you can sleep knowing your work tonight is done.

I like that they showed crack in the bridge window. Hopefully this leads to them using a proper viewscreen later on.

I do love how Discovery fanboys can't actually defend how bad the writing is for this show so they just result to passive aggressive going high shit. Literally every single time since S1 E1.

Seriously what was even the plot and themes of this episode? It was "There were red lights across the galaxy (just completely forget the concept of the speed of light), go check one out, go to asteroid, leave asteroid" that was it, there was nothing else really at all. What choices did the characters have to make? What was the moral or sci-fi concept explored?

The writing is better now though. They’ve given the characters some personality and more things to do.

hopefully they learn to built that bridge in the centre of the saucer (where it belongs) - but they'll probably need a couple of hundred years to get that

they can 'see' stuff (from a starship) instantly a couple of lightyears away since tos - guess what a big fat scientific space station can do

Unfortunately, I have seen similar shit on ALL of the other Trek shows. If I could count the number of fist fights that William Shatner had to fake on "Star Trek", I think I would have fallen asleep before I could finish.

I don't mind action in any Trek show or movie . . . as long as it's not overdone or that it overshadows the drama. My problem with the Season 2 premiere wasn't the action. My problem was the awkward tonal shift and the presence of one Christopher Pike. I would not have minded if he and Spock were merely recurring characters. But I don't see the need for him as regular on this show, considering that his character is the commanding officer of another ship.

It seems since last night the critical voices about DIS have come out of the woodwork more - both here and on the other sites I go to. I think it's important to break apart two different things. One of them is the question is the show well executed? The other is this a kind of show that I will enjoy? In my mind, they're two different things entirely.

I think there's no question at all that the Season 2 premier was more effective in virtually every way than what Season 1 tried to do. More effective VFX. More cohesive characterization. More effective balance between the main character and secondary characters. More naturalistic dialogue. Better use of visuals in storytelling. In every way it seems more polished and professional where Season 1 seemed at times oddly clunky.

However, the thing to remember is it's still - at this point - an action adventure show focused on Micheal Burnham. This isn't going to change. I don't have any expectation of getting a quiet character piece like The City on the Edge of Forever, The Inner Light, Family, Duet, The Visitor, Far Beyond the Stars, etc. It's just not that kind of show, and Kurtzman isn't interested in that kind of Trek. Just give up and engage with the show on the level that it's attempting to entertain you.
