Uhura trailer released

guess tyra will be a racist/sexist as well? by knowing what fits the female body type well in a way that looks lovely the most, unless of course as SNW folks, they are going out of their way to make sure uhura does not look ''too'' lovely.
The fashion world is sexist. And doesn't apply here.

If they are trying to avoid making Uhura too lovely then they failed. Also, proves nothing of the ridiculous point being argued. This is assuming much with no evidence beyond hyperbolic phrasing disproven by people in this thread.

Not buying it.

There's an entire generation of Trekkies out there for whom ST09 was their childhood introduction to Trek, same way mine was TOS and TNG reruns and DS9 S4/VOY S2!
Don't forget the fact there are plenty of new fans for which Star Trek Discovery was their first introduction to Star Trek.

(Yeah I know a bunch of TNG fans are screaming, "Impossible!"; in the same way some of us TOS fans were screaming, "Impossible!" back in 1987 when TNG premiered <--- yeah I know, no one could possibly like that pale imitation TNG over the original and classic Star Trek. Oh, wait...) ;)

Well, this makes me feel old

Somewhat appropriately, Gooding has a fresh approach to the Star Trek mythos. In fact, they didn’t grow up watching the old show. As a nine-year-old kid in 2009, Gooding’s first Uhura was Zoe Saldaña in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek.
Jeezus. How I felt reading this:

And no, I don't need anyone to explain to me how aging works and the fact that young people have grown up on the newest incarnations of Trek first. I'm aware. Just let me have my rhetorical "I'm getting old" moment.

Actually it is not a red flag, sometimes I love how people say they are for diversity, but never listen to the actual diverse people. Malcom X said it best, that part of the problem with the white saviour narrative is that, it is the white man that must still lead, not the black person and I feel this is the case here. please listen to us minorities. we are the ones with the experience of actual racism, the biggest of all has always been, the blonde woman is the definition of beauty and women of color must look like masculine men, so they dont threaten the blonde have more fun woman.

This is the bs trope they have used here.

it is us minorities that are having a issue with what is been done to our POC women, this nonsense stereotype has been there for a long time, that black women should look manly, asexual and unattractive as much as possible even when the actresses are not. we made some progress in the 80s and 90s and 10s, but it looks like the stereotype is back, in the worst ways, where women of color are made to look more like men and are hardly portrayed as 100% feminine.

Also I am a fan of Kerrie marie and hated she was ran off the internet but the movies did her dirty, rose /kerrie is a beautiful girl and they stripped it down in the movie, that was not fair.

Additionally you also dont seem to get it . Lupita is stunning but the difference is that Lupita looks good in low cut hair, black women are a variety of beautiful and we have hair style that showcase that best, what looks good on some, may not look go on others. Lupita and Jada Pinket look good with low cut hair because they have the right facial structure but celia does not, the same way only black women in the 90s looked great in braids like Brandy Norwood when the braid style was huge in the 90s.

In destiny child, Beyonce would have looked awful with low cut hair, unlike Kelly Rowland who looked amazing in it, Black Women know what fits them, Unlike Lupita, SNW has given Ceiia a hair cut that does not fit her face or bone structure because they really want to make her look masculine in every way necessary.

That picture of Laan and Uhura, if not that Celia has a big bust, (breast) I would not be able to tell if that was a woman until I have looked very close but from afar, I can't tell what her gender is. However I can tell Laan is a girl. the fact that i cannot tell with uhura, who is already such an iconic female character, a character screenrant.com even called the best looking female in trek history.

Also look at all the comments here, subconsciously all you are agreeing with me and you dont know it. want to know why?

Many of you have already commented that Chapel looks hot on the Chapel thread, I have yet to see anyone here say Uhura looks Hot as Chapel. so... why is that?

Watch this CBS Tvideo, half of the comment is about womanly and ''hot'' Uhura looks

Not seeing that here and we all know what is going on here, there is an agenda in the media and in Hollywood to erase black physical feminity and this Uhura is their latest victim.
I wasn't going to indulge your nonsense any further and derail the thread, but there are some specific accusations made here that need to be addressed:

- YOU are the only one attempting to "erase" Gooding Uhura's femininity here, not anyone else, so stop projecting your problems onto others.

- I haven't made any such comments about Chapel's "hotness" either on her own in another thread or in comparison to Uhura, so I don't know what the hell you are talking about, nor do I care. The only reason we have even felt it necessary to discuss the issue of appearance and femininity at all is because YOU have forced the issue to be discussed and have forced others to defend Gooding against your spurious and bigoted and sexist attacks, instead of just discussing the actress and the character on their own (non-superficial) merits.

- I don't think the blonde woman is the only or ideal definition or beauty and have said nothing of the sort, nor has that been the attitude of the people here, and I don't think Gooding or Uhura look masculine in the slightest (again, that was YOU saying that) or unattractive or that her looks are part of a conspiracy in order to erase her beauty in favor of the blonde woman, so kindly (but not really kindly) stop putting your shitty fucking outlook on life in other people's mouths.

- You're shocked that the comment sections of a YouTube video have an incredibly bad take on something? The first rule of the internet is don't read the YouTube comment sections. You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. That means precisely jack shit in terms of real world discourse.

- You've been told to stop what you're doing by the admin, and yet you keep doubling down on your rhetoric. You've got to know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run. You're at the run stage. But you keep on holding 'em. Bad idea.

I'm not getting into the back-and-forth here over Gooding's Uhura depiction. But from what I have read, I do want to speak to the issue of Black hairstyles and how acceptance of them has been an issue in Hollywood and the overall society. Just this year, the United States Congress passed the CROWN Act to ban hair discrimination and hopefully that will help change negative perceptions and adverse economic actions for people who have less approved/Eurocentric hairstyles.

Even when it comes to Trek, I recall hearing about how the studio wouldn't let Avery Brooks wear his hair the way he wanted at first, and I've seen some discussion of Sonequa Martin-Green and her changing hairstyles. Every so often I might hear/read about Black actors (generally female) who have had issues with non-Blacks styling their hair, so I think questions raised about hairstyling and if the hairstylists on these projects are in synch with the Black actors, they are styling should not be dismissed out of hand. I'm not saying anyone here is doing that, from what I read, but I do want to make the point.

Uhura looks great, all versions of them do. I think the best Uhura was the one we never got to see, Ms Lupita Nyong'o. As for the fans who think SNW Uhura' hair looks 'too masculine' they need to stop drinking the kool aid of what is considered masculine and feminine beauty in our Western culture. (Put down the damn relaxer box)

Celia gives an update on the ''hair'' debate, guess word has reached her ear as well as the black feminity issue. I knew this topic wont go away so soon but i never expected the actress to address it.

https://tvline.com/2022/04/25/star-trek-strange-new-worlds-uhura-hair-celia-rose-gooding/

I can understand her POV especially when this is a show she is part off but I disagree with some of what she said, as a person who is of African decent myself.

Also Celia, you are right that Nichelle and Zoe had long hair or wore wigs, but I would like to also say that many black women in africa by 90% have what we call long kinky hair that reached their back. they perm it or relax it or keep it natural via turning it to Afro.

Celia is coming from the right place as she is part of the show, however I am happy she is also aware of how seriously we take the black feminity issue and how we worry when we feel, it is been lost. I still dont like the look on her because i dont personally think it fits her face structure. However I hope she does bring the womanly grace the past actress did as she has promised.

Whitney Houston wore her natural hair in shoop video and that was the most beautiful she ever looked, whitney did not need a wig to look pretty.

so celia, yeah you are right that black women dont need wigs or long hair but at the same time, almost bald low cut is not the main look of how black women style their hair and I also want to see that get represented.

if SNW last for like 5 seasons, hopefully we see celia get the varied hairstyle of black women, especially the kinky straight relaxed style, as well as afro or even braids. which are the most popular style for black women both in africa and the usa.
