I think dead parents or dead close family members has always been a trope in Star Trek.

It's a trope in television, period. Often times a lead character in any show will have dead family as part of their backstory and/or have someone in their family die in the pilot episode as the means of what drives them. And throughout the show, whenever the writers want a shocking moment to rock the boat, one of the main cast will have one of their loved ones (usually family, though a potential love interest can sometimes suffice) end up killed.

Nog's mother was never said to be dead. According to the DS9 Companion she was written to appear in Season 6 but was cut.

I looked it up and meant to delete Nog from the list but forgot. Sorry!
