WYZZ 43 for “Encounter at Farpoint” for me. Watched much of TNG and DS9 on that station. Our ABC affiliate WHOI took UPN at late night on Saturdays so I watched the start of Voyager there. I never finished it first run and went off to college in 1998 but ended up coming back to Central IL to finish college and watched ENT on some Peoria station. They got their own UPN affiliate between the time I stopped watching VOY and ENT premiering.

I do remember each Canadian channel I watched the various Star Treks on in that time period. When I first started watching during TNG's sixth season/DS9's first they were on a channel known as MITV (Global these days. DS9 moved to ATV (CTV these days) in its third season, and Voyager started there. Then with DS9's final season/Voyager's fifth they moved to ASN, known these days as CTV2. That's where Star Trek stayed all the way through to the end of Enterprise. Space (CTV Sci-Fi now) also had Enterprise in first run, though they waited until the Sunday after each episode first aired to show it.
VOY was amazing when it was banging on all bioneural gel packs. When it wasn't...wow.
I’ve been mulling over Amok Spock and decided my favourite moment is when Chapel slaps Spock across the head and Spock, without missing a beat, showing surprise or the fact he is pissed off says:
“I am not familiar with this human gesture”.
Brilliant.

In some context I was not too keen on the slap. I wish it was not put there. it felt a little bit out of character even for a comedy episode as this episode was marketed. The slap is not going to hold up well after later rewatch. It felt as if it was trying hard with the girl power thing at the expense of the guy.
Chapel is the definitely the character they changed most maybe even after Spock.
But, what about strict professionalism no matter what the situation?

This is true. I’ve never been front line myself but a friend was a firefighter and he’d tell me sometimes about being in a burned out building with dead bodies about the place as they investigate etc. These are bodies with burned skin and muscles smouldering on the bones, with the odour to go with it. He said if you heard the gallows humour they used just to get themselves through those situations you’d think they were disrespecting the dead and totally belligerent, but psychologically speaking it’s the only way to get through it. I’ve heard the same about ICU ward nurses.

you mean Heroes, Quinto got slapped a lot on that by the Petreli brothers.
Noting personal I just don't like to see women slapping men when it is clear that if a man did that, it would not be taken well even if it was for fun.
I like more gender equal treatment of men and women with some respect for biology.

I'm not a big fan of real physical violence between people either, irrespective of gender, but this wasn't that by any metric.
