Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

According to Rick Berman in a recent interview that isn't true, but he could just be covering for his friend.
No, 'Moonface' pretty much said in an interview that he had absolutely no interest in Star Trek and as far as he was concerned it didn't matter if it was cancelled.

The biggest problem ENTERPRISE had, was UPN constantly treating it like an unloved stepchild.

They kept bumping it for sporting events and specials.
It also seemed to change which day it was airing depending on somebody's whim in the programming dept.
They were also constantly making demands for scripts to be changed to their liking.

The final straw was when the CEO pretty much announced that he hated Star Trek ... Period.
The issue was that some UPN affiliates treated UPN programming like local syndication programming. In other words if they felt they could get higher ad Revenue by running a local sports game, they would preempt UPN programming or move it to a different day of the week.

UPN also didn't have Affiliates in every Major Market back in the day.

From M'Benga's memory alpha page:

[M'Benga] was actually created by Darlene Hartman, in her purchased (but never produced) TOS script entitled "Shol". The notes for that script give Dr. M'Benga's first name as "Joseph", and stated that he was originally a native of Uganda. His brother, Commander Simon M'Benga, was the first officer of USS Hope, a Federation hospital ship, in the planned-but-never-developed Star Trek spinoff Hopeship.

Curious if there's any chance of these ideas making it into new Trek now, although probably not as they'd have to pay royalties to Ms. Hartman (who Memory Alpha indicates is still alive)

Calling @Maurice and @Harvey for a FACT TREK on the Hopeship concept!

ARRRGH. No. Just, no.

@Yistaan. Hartman's first draft script for “Shol”, dated August 23, 1967 (I want to double-check this as there's a discrepancy with the next time, maybe @Harvey remembers), has an M’Benga—no rank indicated— “a junior officer, M’BENGA, seated at Command Post”. He has 3 lines. He's not a Doctor.

Roddenberry and Coon's draft of "A Private Little War" with Dr. M'Benga appeared around early September. But Coon's secretary didn't stamp Hartman's first draft "Shol" script as received until Oct. 9, three days after "A Private Little War" wrapped. At best, they are different characters sharing the same surname.

We lost our UPN affiliate between seasons 6 and 7 of Voyager. I'm still not sure I've seen all the season 7 episodes.
You were lucky. We never even HAD a UPN affiliate either locally or on cable TV. Both VOY and ENT were off the air before I got to watch all the seasons of both.

Never had a UPN affiliate where I lived either. UPN shows would air on other networks in the middle of the night. Voyager/Enterprise were on in the middle of the night (different days) on our local NBC station.

I don't remember what channel I watched Trek on in Canada in the 90s/00s. Probably Space like we still do now.

Maybe CTV if Space didn't exist yet.

The trailer for S01E06 Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach is up on YT, hope it’s a workable alternative for those who couldn’t watch on Twitter:

Apropos of nothing, I found it highly amusing that the two video suggestions that popped up after the trailer ended were one for "Pike's Enterprise" and another for how to make French dip sliders... YUM!!! :guffaw::guffaw:

This week's trailer seems to indicate another Pike episode, which doesn't make me that happy, as I'm still hoping for epsiodes to focus on Ortegas, Chapel, M'Benga, and Hemmer. It might be that every character doesn't get a focus episode this season.

Chicago channel 50 was our UPN outlet. Before that it was just typical UHF stuff: reruns, cheesy old movies and h yeah, TNG. Weird Al would've loved it.

I was raised in Peoria but my grandparents and many aunts, uncles and cousins lived in the Chicago suburbs. I’m fairly certain I watched the TNG finale first run on channel 50 in 1994.

It's great that they're finally doing another episode focused on the star of the show.

The entire supporting cast don't need their own episodes in the first year. Hemmer in particular can wait. :)
