I never liked that explanation to be honest. Part of the original Star Trek's charm, to me at least, was the fact that Kirk and company weren't perfect,

There's a fucktonne of middle ground between perfect and intentionally wiping out all life on a planet...

That's my take on him so far too. I can't imagine him just taking a "more power" order without a snide comment.

"Damnit, Chris, I'm THE engineer and you'll get more power when its damn good and ready!"
