Which is weird because the accident was after Kirk got the Enterprise.
It's a bit more complicated than that. Mostly tied to Colt vanishing from the timeline. My bad for not being clearer.
Not necessarily about Star Trek, but we can hope.
My first real introduction to serialized TV was through the 90s animated series ReBoot. It started off episodic in the first season, began dropping hints at future events and had some interconnecting episodes in the second season, and then went fully serialized in the third season. I think that's not a bad way to do it. Not everything has to immediately throw a bunch of questions at you and tease things along for the whole show.
Cool news, but DAMMIT! 
Reboot's third season is an many ways perfection, even twenty years later.
It's an amazing piece of storytelling from a time when western children's shows were usually too timid to attempt anything on that scale and with such serious stakes. I hope Prodigy comes close to the same quality.

The main excuse to have shows where everybody gets a weekly bout of amnesia in the past was because if you missed the episode, you just missed it and had to wait months for a rerun to see it. That's no longer a problem with the Internet and streaming services, so there's no reason in episodic shows not to at least have emotional throughlines.
Indeed, yes. Even with modern shows there are moments that are extremely jarring when they miss an emotional beat or a moment and I'm streaming it.
I mean, I guess, but that's a rarity for me now. If I want that I revisit old shows.
That's why I own MASH and JAG on DVD.
The fourth season was pure poison though...
