Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

It'll be interesting to see how they handle Pike's foreknowledge of his future. One could argue he (and his ship) should feel invincible because he knows he has to survive up until the point of his accident.

I wonder if they could do a "Yesterday's Enterprise" type episode where he manages to avoid his fate, but it leads to huge problems down the line and he gets the chance to undo it. I know it isn't in Pike's character to do so, but if it was a split second decision then he could falter.

Except the whole point of the vision thing was him rejecting saving his own ass to make sure Control did not kill everyone.

tbh I don't remember much about Discovery S2 because it was shit. But I'm more talking about he sees an opportunity to, in theory, save everyone, which leads to an alternate timeline. Maybe one in which Spock or the Enterprise is destroyed. Idk, was just an idea.

I really want them to do a reverse Final Destination where he starts doing more and more insane things knowing he has to survive... but it ends with him being grounded as an academy instructor leading to the very accident that causes his horrific injuries.

They really seem to be into making things convoluted and tie in and foreshadow, whatnot, in other cbstrek. I wish they would eschew that for this episodic show.

When we had antenna tv with all these 70s reruns that weren't taxing, I nicknamed it "stupid tv" fondly, bc it was relaxing and not taxing. The way baseball used to be until they made it so like youre in school with so much stats and knowledge and . . . there's really something to be said for episodic tv where there isn't character growth or ongoing "drama." Think Adam 12 or Emergency. Jack Webb actually wanted the characters not to grow so they provided the audience stability while the situation/events changed every week. (Yeah, Reed got marrjed, but family life was still way in the backvround.)

This is one case where I hope they drop the need for worldbuilding and tie-ins and just pretend we don't know what's eventually in Pike's future.

Signed,
Old Man Yelling at Clouds

Truly episodic TV like that is a thing of the past, and we're not likely to be getting it ever again. Story arc, or at least some manner of continuity within the show is SOP now. Even children shows do this.

I am having happy Adam 12 memories now. Thanks for the clarification.

I think we saw her/baby in the Wild Ones episode where the bikers harass the good guys in an old town when they're on a day trip, iirc. Which I probably do not.

I wish I could find that essay on the positives of episodic tv. (dumb tv)

The old trope of people coming home from a stressful day, then relaxing in front of the boob tube is not all negative. It is nice to relax and veg out and not have to consider the intricacies of the Picard plot convolutions, say.

Bonanza comes to mind also. Shoot, I think they even wore the same clothes? each ep. Or close to it.

Eh, whatever. Be well, all!

AIR, she was heavy with child in that episode, and the birth episode came not long after.

ETA: "Log 103: A Sound Like Thunder" aired the week before "Log 63: Baby"--November 1 and 8, 1969.

Bonanza was practically a semi-anthology like Wagon Train...the stories tended to focus on the guests of the week.

I like the way BTVS went about this stuff.

To do really decent season-long stories you need much better writers than Trek employs and more creative freedom than the franchise permits.

The late 90s Marvel comic Star Trek: Early Voyages did a storyline like that where Colt visits a future where Pike didn't have his accident and it had repercussions for Kirk.
