Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

And I'll reiterate, I don't just give respect to whole categories of art. I don't say "I respect painting" because I know I'm shit at painting and wouldn't expect people to respect my painting because it's a painting.
I can say I respect art forms because being creative and making something isn’t a thing everyone can do. You’re letting your personal prejudices cloud your judgment.

No. I'm saying my respect belongs to artists not categories. I can have appreciation and admiration for art but respect is a different thing for me.

What actually started this whole tangent were some rather vehement claims that fanfiction is legitimately synonymous with crap.

It seems to me this philsophy you're describing ought to consider disrespecting whole categories of art to be just wrong as respecting whole categories of art.

Only if one wants to engage in broad sweeping generalizations rather than engaging with individual works, and thinking respect belongs more to people than just one art category.

As I said, this my view on respect and it belonging to persons not automatically categories. That is all. Respect is a term I treat far different than many others and for me it's a distinction that may be without a difference to others but is important to me.

No?

Disrepecting whole categories of art is the literal definition of engaging in broad sweeping generalizations rather than engaging with individual works and it fundamentally disrespects the individual people involved without concern for whether they deserve respect or not.

Anyone who thinks such things are bad should support actually engaging with the individual works and leaving the broad sweeping generalizations aside entirely, regardless of whether they're positive or negative.

I'm not disrespecting anything. I stated a category doesn't automatically get my respect. I'm neutral. I'd rather engage with it individual than say "karaoke deserves respect." It's too broad to be meaningful in my opinion.

Categories neither deserve respect or disrespect. They simply are.
