Disagree. The general consensus is that TNG peaked in the middle (seasons 3-5), but was running out of steam by season 7.

I sort of agree but TNG season 6 is still pretty good. Season 7 is the shows worst season. Even worst than season 1 and 2.

Eddington and Muniz were not main cast. Hell, Muniz doesn't even count as a supporting character, he was only in three episodes and the most memorable thing about him is the fact that the characters actually mourned his death afterwards. Eddington's death was in a Sweeps episode, which sort of fits my pattern in that they arranged for his death to be in a period where they knew they were going to get maximum viewers. Jadzia died in a season finale, which is exactly what I was talking about.

You mean an episode where Pike and Spock have to ignore the rather on-the-nose slavery of a Federation member world? And how the Enterprise knows nothing of the situation when it comes back ten years later. No thanks.
I know that's why I wrote that I have no idea what the characters would even do on Ardana, since the heroes couldn't very well leave the society as it is with all it's horribleness. It was really just about the concept and visuals of a floating city.
There's a reason Symbiosis (TNG) is such a hated episode after all.
So it might really be better to have another floating city, if the trope appears.
All I know, is that the SNW folks have their work cut out for them. I don’t envy them their tasks.
With Stratos they could change it so instead of slavery they have systemic racism and people go to work in those mines because they need the money. The message being that if problems don't get solved things will get worst. As for Pike and them not saving them that could be due to the Federation high council intervening because they need them for the stuff they mine. Not every episode has to have a happy ending though most of them should I think.

Floating cities area great way to have very different alien type world but still make sets simple. It would great to see, especially with ideas like balloons to colonize Venus floating around.
Well, they could show it, maybe without spock going down, with a story of how Pike doesn't like the Caste system, but according to Federation Rules, Prime Directive, they can't interfere in individual planets governments, even if there a member of the federation. Maybe at the end Pike asks the Federation Counsel to change its admittance rules to abolish any caste/slavery system. Or Pike was sent there to seek admittance, and Pike says no because of the Caste system, but the Counsel overrides his objection because of the need of the Zenite.

It would be nice if they decided to make it clear that in the 23rd century and specifically during Pike's command the Federation had fuck-all to say about how most of the galaxy's worlds governed themselves and conducted trade among themselves, and that as a reality of life the Federation had to deal diplomatically and economically with those civilizations.

Didn't DS9 already sort of do that? You could often tell via the Ferengi characters their was a whole world of commerce happening outside of the Federation or the Federation would have to deal with these worlds. The Ferengi were not just a bunch of aliens who liked profit but a actual economic power in the Quadrant. In fact our first exposure to the Dominion is via Quark on behalf of his government trying to get into the Tullyberry wine business.
