Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I do like in Star Wars how styles tend to get more '70s looking the closer you get to the Galactic Civil War era. It makes it feel like an actual time period.

I think the deeper appeal comes from the simple fact that the 60's just look cool. One thing I have noticed with lots of young people is they have a love for retro. Clothes or tech. It's all the same. A fascination with looks and designs to time periods they never even lived in. When you get right down to we are right now living in the most boring visual era of all-time. Nothing sexy about touch screens Musk cars that look like metal garbage.

People love the convenience of modern tech but not the aesthetics and even then not always the convenience because people can tell we have lost something that feels more naturally human with everything being so easy. That's why Trek embracing more 60's look isn't just a canon issue. It's also a chance to show people something really cool to look at because you make that 60's look come alive with out the shortcomings of just being limited to 60's era level of tech knowledge.

I disagree. Touch screens are cool, and while the Cybertrucks look like some generic evil empire's foot soldier delivery vehicle, the Teslas are definitely neat. They have gull-wing doors, like in Back To The Future!

I disagree. buttons, switches and levers just look more neat. Plus they are more fun to use because of tactile feel with touching them.

Does it function? Then I don't care. Levers or touch screen. It's meant to do a task not decorate my space.

I played Mario Kart 8 last night, and they had Peach Circuit from the N64 game. Except Princess Peach's castle didn't look the same as the N64 game! I played Zelda and Hyrule castle was way bigger, more detailed and majestic than it ever was on my old Nintendo 64.

And it was fine, because it's been decades since then. Ditto, Star Trek control panels.

One is very much directly connected to our history and the other is not.
So is 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, War of the Worlds, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and The Martian. Oh, and The Absent Minded Professor. Still not our tech.

And all of them (including Star Wars) are our humanity. Star Wars more so than Star Trek because Roddenberry's humans are a more evolved species.

Hahaha...no.

The intent is to present the idea of being more evolved but they definitely are not. But it is an outgrowth of our humanity far more so than Star Wars, and yes like 2001.

My niece bought a PS2, record player and a VCR. I think the look and feel of some eras is timeless, and that's where the appeal comes from.

I may only speak for myself, but technology just isn't that fun anymore. It's more stressful than anything.

My eldest got records and a record player, enjoys VHS, as well as newer technology. Their appreciation makes me more open to finding ways to learn about different facets of tech, old and new.

Oddly, my mom is far more interested in the latest and greatest tech than my kids.

My friends' kids are all into LPs now. I should let them loose in my collection.
