Thomas Jane as Bones is a big get for a glorified cameo, though he's sort of past his peak as an actor though. Still, it makes me wonder how serious the Year One plans are.

He's mostly been in cheap VOD action movies since 2020. He did get two seasons as a co-lead on an Australian TV show between 2022 and 2024.
Regardless, he's not working a lot these days, and what he's working on is a bit lower profile than what he used to get. His film peak was probably from the mid 1990s to mid 2000s. The Expanse came much later, of course, and he did great work on that series, but structurally speaking, Miller was always going to be a limited character given the arc of the books.
If he still has the chops, why should it matter what he's doing lately?

Honestly, I would totally be down for a slightly reworked version of the TMP uniforms.
TMP uniforms with ENT ship patches on the arms and TOS boots, but with TNG Era commbadges.
It doesn't. Except as I noted, he's a big get for one and done (more of a name actor than most of the SNW cast!), yet it's tempered a bit because at his stage in his career, he might just be hungry for whatever he can get.
Hopefully they make some crack about how McCoy used to fuck around a lot, giving us a fourth possibility.
Maybe the gymnast Emony Dax originally gave him the nickname Bones.
