Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

What tipped you over? I'm still not quite there yet. The third was good, probably the best, but I haven't been blown away yet.

As it stands I feel I prefer SNW to PIC, but I prefer DSC to SNW.
This is about where I am right now with how I think I'll be placing the series. Thanks a lot PIC Season 2! I'll just cut-and-paste what I said the other day.

For the SNW in general:
My biggest worry about SNW was that it might be Star Trek's version of Happy Days. A look back to a "happier", "simpler" time before "everything hit the fan". I've never actually watched a full episode of Happy Days, but that's my image of it. And I thought SNW would just be "that happy time before DSC and PIC!" With Pike's accident being a metaphor for things taking a turn for the worse later on. It can be about that, but it shouldn't be just about that. "Children of Illyria" showed me it wouldn't be. And that's what ultimately sold me on this series and put any doubts I had to rest.

For "Children of Illyria" in particular:
Started good, then became better as it went along. I like how Pike dealt with Number One being Illyrian. La'an's reaction struck true as well. But the thing that really drives the episode home is Number One's pointed question to herself: how would she be regarded if she wasn't thought of as "one of the good ones?"

I never really thought too much about it before when all we had of Pike's crew was "The Cage" but ever since SNW has become a thing, I've wondered "Why didn't Number One become Captain of the Enterprise after Pike instead of Kirk?" Sadly with Starfleet Command being the way it is, clutching their pearls in public to maintain an image, I think she doesn't become Captain because of their intolerance. That makes the Starfleet Admirals who decide these things hypocrites since the Federation claims to be tolerant, but all it is is a claim. They're tolerant up to a point, then very intolerant after that.

The characterization remains spectular, the planet-of-the-week crisis looks routine at first, but then the plot becomes more and more character-driven to the point where it overpowers any routine.

The Illyrians on this world tried to bend over backwards to get into the good graces of the Federation by not doing what was necessary to save themselves and it ended up costing their lives. This is why you don't bend over for society so completely. That society doesn't have your best interests at heart.

Not powerful enough to be a 10, but deserves more than an "I really liked it!" 8 because there was so much to take away from it... so I'm going to give this episode a 9.

I found myself watching a couple of episodes of Enterprise the other night and it only just reinforced my feelings that the visual modernization of the 23rd Century seen on this series and Discovery before it really come off as a natural evolution to the 22nd century.

I know there were (and probably still are) those who don't like the visual upgrades both inside and out, but, I think it truly brings the look of the series more in line with what came before and what comes later. As much as I love TOS, it's hard for me to find a rationale for the look of that series in-universe; I know, it's the 1960s.

Miley Cyrus plays her in an episode.

Can I just say how absolutely in love I am with this show?

I thought I became a jaded old man, as I didn't like DIS or PIC, stopped watching both & were longing for the "good old days". I mean - this might still be true, considering how retro this show feels?

But I absolutely love it. TOS has always been my favourite - but it has noticeably aged with time - and this one feels like a modern, updated TOS. There are a lot of nuTrek-isms in it I don't like. But also many I do like, like the characters behaving more human-like, and everything a bit more adventurous and daring than the TNG (or ENT) era. And it's an absolute joy to watch any minute of this, even the stupid ones.

Funnily enough, for me too.... even though in a very different way:guffaw:
Because I thought "Ghosts of Illyria" was not a good episode. An unremarkable plot of the week, with very badly executed double "dark secret"-reveal.

But at the same time - if this is what a bad SNW episode is? Damn, I'm in. I was thoroughly entertained by many bits in it, it didn't feel like I was wasting my time (cough PIC S2 cough), and I freakin' love the casual conversations and pure style of it!

Now of course I'll have to see how the rest of the season shakes out. But right now? I feel like a kid watching Star Trek for the first time again.

Same with me. I like the attention to detail and the surprise reveals in this series.

Early in ghosts of Illyria, when the cabinet was opened there were floating dust particles in the beam from the flashlight. I thought they were a bit large and bright for dust, but later on, when it was discovered that light transmitted the virus, it all came together.

In the 2nd episode, I liked how the initial visual of a comet hitting a planet was suddenly reversed, and zoomed out to a computer simulation, and how they showed the the surprise of a force field on a comet. (Although, why wouldn't the scans have shown the huge structure on the comet before they torpedoed it?)

One thing I have always thought backwards about all of star trek - the teleporters. Sometimes they're use is just unbelievable. In TOS The Enemy Within, they can't use 'em cuz the circuits are fried so the away team is stranded and the temperature is going to drop to -120 degrees. okay, why not send a shuttle to go get them? It's still shirt sleeve weather.

Despite not being 100% sold on it, this show is really sharing some headspace with me recently.

Engineering looks amazing. A different and very cool take on the Warp Core as well. The Enterprise interiors look uniformly great in fact. I want to spend more time there. Loads of nice little touches as well.

I'm really liking Hemmer. He's not mean or moody. He's brusque. Great actor as well to convey what he does through all that make-up.

I like Pike/Spock/Una/Hemmer/M'Benga/Uhura. I think Peck has really improved as he's gone on. Mount and Romjin nailed their characters a long time ago. I was interested to see Pike and Spock effectively sidelined, yet Romjin could still carry the show in E03.

The others I need to know more. I wasn't convinced by Chapel at first but I'm coming round to the actor's interpretation quite a lot. I need more time with the newbies.

It's a really good show. I'm 95% there. I'm mostly unspoiled as well, so I don't know anything about next week. I'm looking forward to the comedy of errors in week 5.
