Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Oh, I've been wanting an adaptation of Caves of Steel for years! Looks like their hasn't been any movement on that recently though.

Yeah, sadly ‪‪I think that one was already on the backburner, and seemed to have fallen off the radar completely, like many Fox film projects in development, after the Disney purchase.

I'm leaning towards the religious angle. I think it would be interesting if they explored him being a Christian. Not into organized religion myself but that would be a unique idea to explore in Trek. Earth religions seem to have all vanished and that is part of the Roddenberry vision but you got to assume some people still believe in them and you got to wonder what it's like for those people in a future that has a more agnostic or humanist view on such things.

TOS featured a number of characters who expressed belief in some religion, with some quoting Biblical scripture. It was not shied away from or said to be gone from the fabric of human life, so one should expect some SNW characters (set before TOS) to believe to some degree.

I know there was a few examples but they were rare examples. Also we never saw any series regulars really exploring their faith in any kind of way. Granted DS9 did see some of it's aliens explore it. Kira and Quark for example.

We know Pike is a Christian (he's mentioned attending church during his appearances on DSC). So he may make some offhand references to it on occasion.

That's probably all they'll do. They won't do a full episode about it, maybe have a character mention their beliefs in passing, or have a shot on a starbase (or even the Enterprise) with an interfaith chapel or something like that.

Like the chapel that the Enterprise actually has, as seen in "Balance of Terror". ;)

The Cage implies he had a religious upbringing as well.

Or at the very least he was told about Hell for some reason.

I recall Anson Mount pronouncing "cavalry" as "calvary" in one episode, and the discussion that ensued a couple years back about it. It is actually a common southern-dialectical mispronunciation, with many churches having the word "Calvary" in their name, derived from the Latin "Calvariae Locus" (the part of the skull, or cranium, encasing the brain), and the Greek "Golgotha" (Place of the Skull), the hill upon which Jesus was crucified, indicating a possible traditional church upbringing for Pike. I have no idea if this was an intentional affectation that applied to the character's history, or if this was an accidental mispronunciation made by Mount during that scene.

Can anyone confirm that SNW's version of the Enterprise bridge has removed the corridor going around the perimeter (behind the consoles)? I started a thread about that in DSC. Somehow I heard that they did that.

I kinda wish they hadn't, to be honest. I liked the corridor. I wonder if SNW will actually reference it in-universe (like ripping out the holo-communicators) or simply pretend it was never there in the first place?

Didn't Tuskin do to in that very thread?

Who were series regulars.

I know but what I mean is we haven't seen any serious regulars that follow earth religions. Uhura was able to see the Jesus example in the Rome episode but that doesn't mean she is Christian. Just means she figured out what was going on before Kirk and the others. I do believe though in the comics the Starfleet Academy comic you had one character who was either Jewish or Muslim. I forget which.
I think it would be interesting if they also invented a new earth religion like Dr Franklin believed in on Babylon 5. You would think some new ones would pop up in 300 years or so especially as humans move out into space and start encountering other species.

I don't miss the corridor but I feel like the door is too close now. I think TOS had just a bit more of an alcove.

The way Uhura explains the situation is delivered like a believer. She does not bracket the statement with some "well, they seem to believe in.." or "they refer to that character from...". She seems genuinely pleased that Christ is the Son the people are following.

Why? You don't see the majority of the Vulcan population creating a bunch of new religions based on being exposed to aliens. Their belief/practices and the history behind it is spiritual and defining--the essence of who they are, so it would not be subject to random influences from extraterrestrials. The same would apply to the larger faiths of Earth.

I disagree, while I don't thank there would be wide spread adoption of alien religions, I would certainly expect some smaller branches to form. I mean in the way to Eden that religion (cult, whatever) had members from several species so clearly it does happen. It just might not be widespread.
