I think part of the difference is while Kirk was sometimes completely befuddled by the shit he was put through, he always treated his missions with deadly seriousness.

Pike, in contrast, is very clearly not a serious captain. At this point, I'd take Season 1-2 Archer over him. He's just a chill guy who lets everything slide and half-asses the missions, because it's all in good fun, right?

Yeah. He just isn't the captain Hunter made him out to be in The Cage. I much prefer Hunters performance. The whole tattoo scene and him making a fool of himself to the alien delegation was just too much. Yeah when Kirk had a similar think happen in The Naked Time the safety of his ship and crew knocked him back to his senses right quick.

Also most of the crew acted like morons on the planet. Just a whole farcical episode. We still have the puppet comedy episide coming up. That two in a season of 10 episodes again.
SNW started out pretty decent but descended into too much weird comedy and relationship stuff. N I thought we would see a ton of strange things out there in deep space like we got in TOS but so far we get little of that. Its all relationship stuff and how everyone feels about eachother or loves their job. I've given up seeing anything as good as The Doomsday Machine or The Cornimite Maneuver. That is brilliant Star Trek. But there is good news.

He still did his duty. He got Spock to calculate a engine cold start.

The puppet episode is supposedly pretty good.

Not necessarily. Could be a love story, tragic or otherwise, or just something involving deep emotions and relationships.

In my experience, SF fans too often dismiss as "soap opera" stories that focus on feelings and relationships instead of, say, quantum event horizons.

Not just a Star Trek thing, but an SF thing going back to the fifties at least. "Science fiction is about ideas, not personal soap operas!"

Thats another thing its always 1980s music. STP did the same thing. Why not 1950s or 60s? I think STD had a disco song once.

Star Trek had to go against the grain and write stories about people, damn it! Stupid humans and their stupid stupidness of emotions! No one likes emotions!

To be honest I'm just glad we've moved on from the nightmare of unending jazz and classical.

I'd like it if they went all out and just wrote that 90s Eurodance is having a resurgence in the 23rd century.

i remember in the early Noughties on this board, when you had people saying Berman era Trek felt too stiff and formal compared to popular shows of the era, like Buffy, Farscape, Stargate, etc when the characters could have more fun and be silly sometimes.

That said ,this one didn't work for me. Maybe i just didn't get the joke. Haven't seen the Hangover. In a ten episode season, having so many farcical episodes feels like wasting a slot. In a 26 episode season, it wouldn't stand out as much
