The writing was never the problem, the concept stage was in season 3. They went overboard with the whackiness that previous seasons had but with a more delicate touch and much more spread out. Maybe focus groups and social media/online chatter led them to believe that these episodes were what people wanted more of and they obliged but overshot the target.

I hope season 4 reigns it in a bit more and retuns to a better mix of whacky, drama and the "traditional" message episodes that Trek is so famous for.

I don't think most people are aware Star Trek is famous for "traditional message" episodes. I'm sure there would be some meh episodes with a stinker or two but still fun to watch when not trying to overthink things.

Sure but writers don't decide what gets made usually, producers and studio bosses do. And if the order comes down to do more whacky then that's what writers will write.
