I think the other thing I love was the acknowledgement of how powerful the Enterprise is. It seemed the ships got nerfed as the franchise progressed. This one small battery wiped out two civilizations. Destroying one planet and pushing another out of its orbit.

This only reinforces how General Order 24 wasn't just a bluff, but a real thing in TOS. Nobody wanted to implement it, but a starship like the Enterprise can lay waste to an entire planet. Even José Tyler in "The Cage" said that they could reroute ship's power to the Enterprise's main weapons if they wanted, enough to "blast half a continent."

There was always some inconsistency here, as far back as TOS. In "Whom Gods Destroy," Garth claims to have discovered some super-colossal doomsday explosive that dwarfs anything possessed by the Federation -- but which, onscreen, doesn't seem more potent than a stick of dynamite. (He blows up a dancing girl, not a planet.) Is that really more impressive than what we've been told the Enterprise is capable of?

Although I suppose we can rationalize that Garth was simply off his head and delusional.

That's my take. Yeah, one grain of that explosive can set off an IED-size boom, but the ship alone can do way bigger than that with just main phasers.

A fantastic season opener. Loved it. The planet exploding to become the asteroid belt reminded me of the classic James Hogan novel "Inherit the Stars". In that book the core of the exploding planet became Pluto.

Did the Martians who escaped their planets demise, become the Preservers? Did they actually end up seeding Earth themselves?

The Preservers, seem to protect low tech worlds from natural disasters.

This didn't happen here.

Remember how Silik got to the wrong 1944?

"Weeks" earlier during your standard adventure, instead of running away after losing a battle of wits with Johnathan, "the most dangerous man in the galaxy" finds a spare bunk on Enterprise and hunkers down.
