I gave the premiere a 6 and thinking back that might have been a little harsh. The reason why I say that is because I liked this episode a little less than the premiere. I thought the negotiations were great and seeing Vance and Ake working together was nice. I also liked the ending of putting the Headquarters on Betazed. The problem I had with the episode though is similar to what I had with the premiere. Some of the dialogue is still cringeworthy (I too don't like the slang) and the stuff at the end with the "brah" and "tight" is a perfect example of what I mean. It's the 32nd century and they are still talking like that?

I'm giving this episode a 6, which is the same as I gave the premiere, but if I can change my vote, I would probably give the premiere a 7.

The Briker looked so much like Rok that it did put another smile on my face. Also, the Exo-Comp made me think of Peanut Hamper before she went Rouge, so thanks for the references to animated trek writing team.

Oh you were quoting Way to Eden. I think the only things I remember from that episode was it being Trek's first unofficial musical and "We Reach".
The episode made up a lot of future slang and it is the evidence of how not to write slang. I think the Disney Channel movie about Zenon: Girl of the 21st century did a better job with slang than Trek has.

That reminds me, I still hate that they talk like actual frat guys. lol

This episode was better than the first one for me because there were no dumb explosions and murders, but it felt like a worse version of all the rebuilding the Federation episodes in Discovery for some reason. Like Betazed aren't really giving a legitimate reason to hate the Federation other than this random threat we know nothing about and the negotiations are just adults speechifying at each other. Couching the story in a teen romance (or however old Caleb is supposed to be, I honestly can't tell) is fine actually, but they also didn't have the chemistry to make it work for me - I want to blame the writing, but I'm not really sure.

Also I really think there needs to be a balance between the boring backdrop and corridor sets of 90s era Trek and their representation of the Academy/Earth and here where they just pack the screen with things happening in the background. It just feels visually noisy.

I dunno, I have hopes for the series still but I was expecting a lot more based on the early critical reviews.

A few years ago, I visited the university I attended in the early-'00s, and they'd redesigned the entire campus since I was there. The entire place looked like an optical migraine. So, SFA actually looks like a real college.

It also looks super-expensive. If they built everything from scratch, I can see where a lot of the budget went.

Yeah, normally I can't stand fratboys, or their cousins dudebros, but it was also in-line with what I'd expect, so I didn't take issue with it. My thought was, "Yup. This feels accurate."

Found this episode to be okay, but not great or all that good. A 5.

Also, when did Betazoids become only Empaths as a Race?

In TNG/the 24th Century - Betazoids were full Telepaths.

Troi was only an Empath and not a full Telepath because she was half Human/half-Betazoid. Interesting that all the Production staff (some who work on ST:VOY back in the day) seem to have confused that fact of Trek lore.

Considering a lot of young guys around that age @ numerous colleges talk like that IRL.
It fits, so I have no issue with it.

I'd rather they just make up future frat bro speak rather than have two aliens who would likely have no understanding of 21st century America talk like they are characters from today. Especially after the Burn and a century of no contact between species, where culture would have diverged if not stagnated.

I'm reading that as not a compliment, but I'm not sure. lol

I assume they filmed some of this on a campus in Ontario, but it doesn't look recognizable to me.

Oh yes, they filmed at Waterloo's campus.

I wouldn't be surprised if all the old Pre-Burn "Earth Media" was still widely spread around across the entirety of the UFP.
21st Century America's entire Video Library would be easily available to anybody.
Including how we talked.

Even though the show takes place in the far flung future, it still needs to be relatable to folks who are actually watching it now.
(especially to those new viewers eyeballs that They are hoping to bring in)

It's not really a period piece per say, that's needs to have a specific dialogue of its own.

The little speech device the Betazoid president used has the (accidentally?) stolen fan made Betazed emblem on it that they’ve been using in the shows since Picard season 1.

The music motif that plays when Caleb and Tarima are together almost sounds like ‘A Tale As Old As Time’ from beauty and the beast lmao

The modern dialogue doesn't bother me, but my preference is shows like The Expanse, which take time to worldbuild with their own slang terms, rather than just use contemporary ones.
