I just got done with the first episode. Unfortunately I didn't particularly enjoy it. I still don't like this Trek future that they introduced in Discovery and other than the Doctor, none of the characters got me to like them, some I actively dislike already. Lines like "I'm Khionian, bitch" do not fill me with confidence in the writing either.

I'll stick with it for a few more episodes but I may just drop it.

That was pretty good. It felt a bit pulled in two directions, with the comedy and character stuff being much more interesting than the main plot (which, wisely, seemed to get a bit pushed to the side in favour of more scenes of the characters chatting, and Thok's surgery). I get the feeling they're gonna lean more and more into that as the series goes on.

I really like Thok, she's the sort of vivid, funny character (and performance) you just don't normally get in this era of Trek. She fits right in alongside Picardo, whose performance was pitch-perfect, and the holo-girl is shaping up to be a winner too.

Easily a much better first impression than Discovery and Picard, and is actually fun to watch and gets a few laughs, which I can't say about any other recent Trek other than SNW. 7/10.

The episode hasn’t been up on any platform for 24 hours. It’s at 24k midafternoon on the day it launched at midnight. People have work and sleep and other priorities. Give it a little time before one suggests it “bombed.”

Well on the West coast it was 9. It just seems strange that 15.5 hours later only 26k views. They put it on youtube to attract new viewers to star trek and Paramount plus. For such a huge property I would have expected much higher.

That’s a quarter of the country. You are seriously just looking for any reason for this to fail. Not everyone is going to jump on watching anything in the day of streaming. They’ll get to it when they get to it. What were you expecting? 7million views in three hours? Again, people work. People sleep. People have families and other responsibilities. I have no idea of the viewership and I’m honestly not expecting it to be amazing but you can’t judge in this day and age in just a little bit of time.

The start had a strong star wars feel to it, and finally got rid of it when they landed on Bajor. I also found it interesting that they planted star fleet symbol what seemed like everywhere. Almost like they were trying to remind old trek fans that this is actually star trek.

I like how the klingon looks, but he acts very human. I think it would be better if he was more Klingon with a softer touch that tried to work around the differences with the other cultures.

They seem to be relying heavily on the burn, but it stick out like a sore thumb because its so damn illogical. Like how we have the records for prominent starfleet personnel but all the best scientist and engineers all got strapped to dilithium and star fleet forgot how to do anything. Star fleet in disco and SFA is the polar opposite from themselves in the 90s. They really need to explain the burn better rather than shit happened let's move on.

The use of #1 in what seems like every day show is getting really cringe.

Outside that I found the episode entertain but forgettable. I like the captain, i'm not sure how I feel about the Jem hadar. She seems to act human with Klingon words thrown in. The doctor was fun as usual though nobody else seems to stand out, well except for the holo cadet, she is interesting.

I gave it a 5.

Again, my problem wasn't just Ake getting the job, but also Ake being plunked into it with less than a day's advanced notice.

That's just not how any job in the world works. Maybe certain very high-need jobs in the military, if the last guy got killed or incapacitated. But for someone in a command position, you'd want some time to let the new guy put their affairs in order, do a cram session on duties and protocol, etc.

Raymond A. Spruance went from Captaining the cruiser Northhampton in Cruiser Division Five to Rear Admiral in overall command of Task Force 16 with the carriers Enterprise and Hornet at the Battle of Midway less than 24 hours after Task Force 16 returned from the Doolittle Raid and Rear Admiral Halsey was incapacitated with shingles, after Halsey's recommendation.

26k is genuinely pretty dire, I follow a DarkSydePhil drama channel that gets more than that in a day! It sucks because the show - judging by the first episode, at least - is better than that and deserves more.

The show's fighting uphill against its own marketing, though - Paramount should have made it clear this is a fun, fast-paced character-driven comedy show (or at least, seems to be from the first episode), but all pre-release material suggested it was just gonna be the usual Kurtzman drama with teen stuff layered on top. I went into it dreading it and thinking I'd drop it after one episode, when in fact it might end up as my favourite of the Kurtzman shows by a mile, but I'd never have guessed from the marketing.

So I watched the first episode last night and was pleasantly surprised. I liked it quite a bit. It does kind of reminds me of Discovery, but with more heart, for lack of a better word. There is a warmth to it that Discovery sometimes struggled to find, and the characters feel like they are being set up as people first rather than just pieces in a larger plot.

It feels like Discovery was the pre alpha version of the 32nd century, while Starfleet Academy is the beta test leaning toward full launch. You can really feel the lessons learned from making Lower Decks, Picard, and Strange New Worlds baked into the show.

It's also genuinely nice to see the series being received well by fans so far. I cannot deny a small amount of joy knowing that certain loud idiots online like Robert Meyer Burnett and that SciTrek fool must be absolutely furious that the sky is not falling and that Star Trek is once again seemingly finding an audience.

I'm sure I'll have more to say once I watch the second episode.

Not when they have two seasons in the can. I would expect a decision probably after S1 has aired (IE - They want to see some actual streaming ratings before deciding); - but if they also decide not to renew Alex Kurtzman's contract then I would expect the series to be canceled after S2.

If they do renew his contract it has a chance for a S3.
Looks like the first two seasons had planned filming from August to February, so they have plenty of time to renew if they want to keep a steady one season per year schedule. They can pay for more scripts to be written if they need a few more weeks or months to make a decision.

I also think they are waiting for ratings to come in before renewing and/or setting the budget for new season(s). Since SNW is ending they will probably want to try to keep at least one show in production. I think they have a lot of production assets in the Toronto area so stopping all Trek TV production would make it harder or more expensive to start it up again there or elsewhere.

Without having read all the comments, my 2 cents:
It was...okay. Very inoffensive. There was enough to like in there for me to continue watching as a hardcore Trekkie. But I fear this show won't even register outside of the very hardcore fanbase.

The highlight for me definitely was the cadet dynamics & interactions. That was what kept the episode alive. Caleb is a solid "typical mildly rough bland white hero character", played by an incredible charismatic minority actor. That kid is fucking gold & can carry a show. My only complaint about him is - did you see this guy? He's fucking THOR. His muscles don't even fit in his clothes!
The other characters were solid, but no real break-out characters either. Jayden the Klingon maybe was the most memorable. The teachers as well - mostly solid to pretty good (Nalah Ake & Doctor)

The one break-out character for me is the Jem Ha'dar/Klingon teacher. She rocks. I love her.

What sucked ass was the main plot. Most pilot episode have somewhat "safe" plots, this was the most by-the-numbers pirate take-over I have ever seen.

The show also suffers from what io9 called fittingly premature nerdgasm: The hero & bully working together, the scared student saving his scary teachers' life, the team working together saving everyone's life, people with a conflicting past forgiving each other - it's just... too much? Like ALL emotional moments, at once, on steroids. It makes all the single moments weaker, undermines the character (in his first scene he's an egoistic bully, in his second scene he already sacrifices himself to save everone - that took Draco Malfoy YEARS. It just feels after one episode all the characters have already gone to the conclusion of their character arcs. So where do they go from there? The writers have to throw more shit at the wall to see what sticks.

World building was very muted - they didn't even explain the burn. Which maybe works in favour of the episode to be honest. Technology & scifi elements was incredibly bad again - there's not really set-ups & pay-offs, everything can happen at any moment, you just have to shut off your brain & follow the plot on an emotional level.

Overall - I kinda' like it. But that is primarily due to the charismatic actors. The writing/ploting is the big weak point. Very similar to the JJTrek movies in this regard.

I haven't given s review yet. Mentioning the youtubes low viewings doesnt mean I want it to fail. Im making an observation.
