Who knows, maybe she did a cram session on her flight to the Academy for catching up on any new Protocols that have showed up in the 15 years since she's been gone.

I understand the academic year may have a hard start based upon say the Earth calendar, but I cannot believe that Vance waited until 1-2 days prior to the start of the semester to offer Ake (an old friend, and possible mentor) the job.

There was the StarFleet War College which was in operation the entire time.
Right, but in the 4th season DIS episode All is Possible, Tilly is explicitly training Starfleet Academy cadets. Furthermore, Kovich implies in that episode that the Academy had been set up for at least a short time (months, perhaps) already.

Also, with the information that Jay-den is queer, i couldn't help but notice a hint of possible attraction from jay-den towards Caleb in some of their interactions.

Totally missed the Jay-Den is LGBTQ+ and I say that as LGBTQ+ myself. I was too busy slash-shipping Caleb and Derem
Was this mentioned in dialogue? I read those posts before watching the episodes and I was really intrigued because I'm one of those letters myself. But I didn't catch anything of the sort?

Advanced reviewers say it'll be made clear later. I think the fourth episode is supposed to focus on his backstory.

I rationalize it as Ake wasn't Vance's first choice. Something (who knows what?) happened to whoever was supposed to be Chancellor and he was running down the list.

Ive now read a few reviews from the preview reviewers who mention it, but yeah, i didn't get the vibe in todays episodes.

I read it the reverse, that she WAS his first choice, kinda like them recruiting Captain Bridger in SeaQuest, "let me go to Bajor and ask her, whats the worst that could happen, and if she says no, we'll offer it to (insert more traditional choice)"

The war college is likely for the dark uniformed Federation security that operates alongside uniformed Starfleet personnel and has some integration and rank crossover but they exist for Federation security purposes on a grander scale than just ship or station board purposes. Lieutenant Willa was Vance's chief of secuirty and she was one of these and not just a yellow division stripe officer presumably because it was Federation HQ at the time. Nahn then later had one of these uniforms as she was working for Federation security and not a secuirty division officer but still carried her commander rank.

Extreme circumstances?

Interesting, SFA & the War College might be operating in parallel, especially given how there are entire generation of students who have graduated from the War College into proper StarFleet Officers.

The time-crunch eschaton brings up is a fair point.

But both can be true. Ake is Vance's first choice, she doesn't want it, Vance decides to go with someone else, something happens to said someone else, then Vance goes back to Ake, who's still a little resistant but finally says yes.

If ACADEMY doesn't do well in its first season, there definitely won't be a third. Among the reasons, the recent merger and Kurtzman's contract expiring at the end of the year

Totally agree. The premiere on youtube bombed. The U.S. alone should have gotten at least 100k views. Im starting to suspect that the age group this is aimed at just isnt interested. There are too many other shows they would feel they needed to watch before it. Paramount will need to look at viewership on Paramount plus. If it does well there theyll probably do a third.

I really enjoyed that and gave it a 9.

Holly Hunter is an inspired choice ae the lead as she has I'm hooked on every word she says.

My early favourite character the female Jem'Hadar riding the new recruits! :D

Also enjoyed seeing a Klingon that wasnt a warrior.

But they also spent whatever political capital they had to basically get Caleb out of jail to recruit her.

The episode hasn’t been up on any platform for 24 hours. It’s at 24k midafternoon on the day it launched at midnight. People have work and sleep and other priorities. Give it a little time before one suggests it “bombed.”

Watched the first episode at lunch, and I have to say that some of my fears were put to rest. The beginning came off a little too much like Star Wars in atmosphere and tone, but as the episode progressed it went firmly into Trek.

I love Ake! She has a chill, calm, encouraging style but not afraid to carry a big stick. The cadets we've been introduced to are likeable for the most part, and didn't show an angst that I was afraid would come out. They seemed to be positive and looking forward to this experience, yet some showing doubt at their abilities and their place there. Nothing out of the ordinary there for me!

The whole episode looked incredible! Sets, visuals and shooting style all looked fantastic and near cinematic! Music sounded good from what I heard of it (it should be mixed a little less quiet so it becomes more of the scene).

One negative for me is the quest of looking for Caleb's mother being some overshadowing reason for Ake and Caleb being there. Starfleet isn't a private detective agency and that could end up clouding judgement on a mission or more pressing circumstance. Not a huge negative for me, but it did make me think it should have been another angle for Caleb joining Starfleet.

For me, a solid 8. Going to watch the second episode after work!
