I gave it a 8. I would have given it a 9 just because of its extreme Trekiness (the general story could have been a TOS or TNG story easily), but I was bothered by the odd fast editing in the first 2/3 or so of the episode.

The editing did slow down to a normal pace for the last part, but there was a time in the first half and middle that it was jumping camera set-ups and scenes too quickly.

This episode was very good. I enjoyed it probably more than I have a Discovery episode yet. And for the first time since Enterprise, you could feeeeel the Star Trek. I've enjoyed all of Discovery, but it didn't feel like Star Trek to me until tonight. wonderful.

The only thing I do not enjoy is it looks like next week will be about Klingons, and basically a filler episode. Ugh. I wish Star Trek would never feature Klingons again. Like, never ever ever ever again. It's so played out.

50,000 lightyears from the Federation (give or take)...almost to where you're leaving Beta Quadrant for either Delta Quadrant or extra-galactic space, right?

Depends. Earth is in the middle of beta and alpha quadrants. This could be at the far side of the beta Quadrant. Closer to the barrier than the delta boundary.
Must be just pass Gorn space I bet

I'm going to go with an 8. I like that Pike's father was both religious and a scientist. Also interesting that Burnham and Owosuken have never been or seldom been to a church.

I've been to a church exactly three times in my life. When my mother died and at two weddings. As a half-Iranian, my father is Muslim and my mother was Christian. I wasn't raised on a religion but they decided I could choose my own faith... but then I ended up not choosing a religion. While that's basically where it stops with me, and I'm only Agnostic, my brother is a hardcore Atheist. All of this used to lead to some interesting discussions...

One time my uncle (who's deeply religious) told me if I didn't believe in God, then it meant my mother was in Hell. I really had to hold my tongue. You don't try to force someone into believing by talking like that. My father is more open-minded, luckily. Though he believes a type of energy leaves your body when you die.

My thoughts about different religions (besides "I won't know until I die and I'm not in a hurry to die") are that they either can't all be true or, if they are, then they were interpreted differently. If they were interpreted differently than all could be true and it makes sense that all religions are represented in the Church on New Eden.
One can take it all nonliterally and give yourself over to the poetry and archetypes of it all to connect with the depth and mystery of existence. I am a formerly literal Christian who now is, oddly, more "observant" because of how I believe the symbols move and help my soul resonate with the One, to use a Trek term from a different thread.

I feel like it was a step down from last week. I'm giving it a 7.

What I liked:

  • Bridge crew like Owosekun and Detmer treated as characters - even moreso than the first season.
  • Tilly's invisible friend was creepy as fuck
  • They decided to not make the religious humans into some sort of dangerous cultists - they avoided the obvious plot route. Instead the "crisis" - such as it was - was with the guy with a scientific background, which was a nice twist.
  • This wasn't a "Burnham saves everyone" plot. Micheal is sort of a know-it-all, but she's not really integral to much in this episode. Pike, Stamets, Tilly, and even Detmer are more integral to solving the crisis of the week.

What I disliked:

  • I normally love Frakes direction, but this episode was absolutely positively awful. The lighting was wrong in so many shots - overly harsh and glaring. The scenes were cut too fast in places, giving me a headache. And even more than last episode, the music was mixed too loudly, and the dialogue too low. I felt like I was straining to hear the dialogue. If the episode was better directed, it would have gone up an entire point.
  • Tilly continues to be too much, and is the weak link now in the cast.
  • The dialogue in general wasn't as sharp this episode
  • The entire monologue the religious lady gave was cringe-inducing. It should have been played as some sort of ritualized sermon. But instead she said what happened 200 years prior in a very matter-of-fact manner, save for the angel - as if it hadn't fallen into legend at all. Worse, since the bridge crew was undercover - supposedly from the north - she should have presumed they knew it all already. It's an infodump for the sake of the viewer, which is a big no-no for scriptwriters.

Subtitles are fucked up. Delayed by several minutes. :brickwall:
I thought it was just my set-up. I spent about 5 minutes starting and stopping the stream and and toggling the subtitles seeing if I could get it working correctly.

Also, did anyone hear any dialogue in the preview for next week. I had music but no dialogue.

Must be just past Gorn space, I bet.

Where's a copy of the map? "Local space" for Federation purposes covers a 750 ly diameter spherical shape, and includes Gorn territory, "sandwiched" between UFP and Klingon turf in the rimward direction.

When they say Terralysium's 50,000 ly away, that means it's way past Klingons, Romulans, and everyone else the Federation knows of in either 23rd or 24th Centuries so far.

Gave it an 8 before reading everyone's thoughts. Most of what I'm reading sums up my take on the ep -- solid, classic Trek episode with a planetside mission and a moral dilemma, and the crew of the starship comes to the rescue and saves the day.

I wrestled with the moral dilemma of obeying the PD and leaving the New Edenites there. I strongly related to Jacob and loved his scene with Pike. I just wish he'd given the colony more of those power cells! They're pretty far out.

Tilly is just fine to me. I don't find her over the top. Others' mileage varies, but I think she's charming. The revelation that the friend was not really there, and was deceased, was chilling.

Glad to see Owosekun on a mission. Love her and Detmer. Hope to see more from the boys on the bridge in future eps as well.

My one critique is that I think the pace can sometimes be a little too fast. One of the things I love about Trek is how the filler episodes are a calming thing to watch in the evening and at night after a long stressful day. Disco is thrilling, but sometimes, I feel like it's on what my friends and I used to call "Scandal pace" (based on the ABC show that just ended, a soap opera about a DC fixer where everyone talks and walks super duper fast). During the first half, I found the movie pace was a little much for me -- for instance, when Pike and Burnham go straight from the ready room to the bridge in the blink of an eye.

Still intrigued by the backstory and the mystery of the Red Angels. Adding the Preservers to the list of possibilities alongside the Iconians based on this thread. It was awesome to get that Spock VO at the opening of the ep -- Peck's really doing that voice justice! I got chills for a second, I'll admit it.

Funniest line: "Run, Mr. Stamets!" LOVE Saru. He deserves the Captain's chair in season 3... then Burnham.

Can't wait to rewatch.

That was incredible. I enjoyed the SHIT out of that. Made me feel like I was watching a really good TOS episode again. And that's one of the highest compliments I can pay a Star Trek spin-off.

Great problem solving stuff...the away mission was great...hell they modified the main deflector! The main plot /mystery was sufficiently advanced. Loved it.

I'm glad that my theory about the phenomenon being a beacon to rescue people in distress seems to be playing out.

Spore drive is back!

Only criticisms:

1. Tilly was a little too Wesley here
2. No more "Black Alert" announcement???
3. Pike pretty quickly rationalized using the spore drive, against orders
4. They need to figure out a purpose for Stamets. He's too good a character to just hook into the drive every now and then.

Those did not detract from my pure enjoyment of this outing though....not even a little.

9/10

Shameless gushing to follow.
