Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

Since when can U.S. citizens legally have only one name?

I would be surprised if there's any law prohibiting it. There are still places in the world where people only have one name and some of those people immigrate to the United States. I would be surprised if the law explicitly prevents them from having only one name.

Indeed. That would be a horribly discriminatory law.

And indeed there is no such law. A number of people in the US have legally changed their names to mononyms, including Cher, the magician Teller, and the wrestlers called Chyna and Warrior.

Basically, you can give yourself whatever name you want with only a few exceptions:

http://family.findlaw.com/marriage/how-to-legally-change-your-name.html
  • You can't change your name just to escape debt liability or to hide from criminal liability.
  • You can't change your name in order to commit a crime.
  • You can't change your name with the intention to mislead. This usually involves taking the name of a famous person. Courts typically do not allow this, unless you have a convincing reason that is not related to the famous person or the use of his or her name.
  • You can't choose a confusing nameone that includes numerals or punctuation. However, some courts have permitted people to spell out the numbers, for example "Seven" instead of "7".
  • You can't choose a name that would intimidate, offend, or be considered obscene.
  • You can't choose a racial slur.

Alright, I concede on the naming thing.
Really? Is that the same USA where people look at you funny for not even having at least an initial as a middle name? XD
That's true. I have no middle name, and most people are surprised when they hear that before dismissing it as an unimportant issue.

On different subjects, how much of the world believes and doesn't believe in the concept of innocent S.H.I.E.L.D.agents? And I wonder what agency May's mom is retired from.

The problem is how can you tell? As I stated before, everyone in SHIELD is a possible HYDRA agent until proven otherwise. Knowing that, it's just easier rounding them up and imprisoning them indefinitely.

On thing that is bothering me is that why is everybody assuming it's only SHIELD that's been compromised. Pierce worked in the State Department and we know at least one Senator was a HYDRA agent.

And I wonder what agency May's mom is retired from.

HYDRA!!! Just kidding. Probably either CIA, NSA, Military Intelligence or State department.

For that to be true Fury had to have known about Hydra and allowed it to persist for years.

Maybe he did. He did support the Avenger Initiative rather than building more advance weapons as desired by world council (who may have been infiltrated by HYDRA).

Then why the hell did he tell their leader that he was worried about a plan he knew something was fishy about and would probably figure they were involved with.

Hell Captain America: the Winter Soldier kind of blows holes in the Fury knew about HYDRA theory what with him doing things that would be boneheaded if he knew the whole time or being surprised by things that would seem obvious if he knew about HYDRA.

Probably not to look insubordinate or tip them off.

Not necessarily, he may have suspected HYDRA but had no evidence (hence him hiring those mercenaries to attack a SHIELD communication ship)

He suspected something, I don't think he necessarily suspected HYDRA. I seem to recall dialog exactly on point for this in the movie, but I'm not spending another $10 to find it.

"Your only name is Skye?"
"Well the orphanage named me Mary Sue..."

Now they're just trolling us... :guffaw:

A little disappointed nobody mentioned that...
Seriously? I totally didn't catch that....

Now we can call her a Mary Sue all we want! It's literally true!

He must have suspected something truly nasty to basically commit treason and fund an act of terrorism. I don't think he would have done it unless he knew it was HYDRA.

I wonder. Loki's scepter from The Avengers was seized by S.H.I.E.L.D. and presumably studied. But we saw Garrett raid the Fridge for HYDRA, so why wasn't the scepter there since we know from Captain America: The Winter Soldier
that Baron von Strucker and his cronies have it
. The scepter seems like something extremely important for regular S.H.I.E.L.D.to lose track of. And on that note, why isn't Baron von Strucker coming to pick up all the important stuff Garrett stole? Wouldn't he personally want to use the Peruvian 0-8-4?

...I don't remember Coulson being so popular that people wanted a TV show about him (he's not as popular as you think).
He had Chuck Norris-level popularity at one point.

"Coulson died 20 years ago. Death just hasn't built up the courage to tell him yet."

"Coulson can win a game of Connect Four in three moves."

"Coulson can get breakfast at McDonald's after 10:30."

"Coulson has a grizzly bear carpet in his room. The bear isn't dead, it's just afraid to move."

"If you spell Phil Coulson in Scrabble, you win forever."

"Your only name is Skye?"
"Well the orphanage named me Mary Sue..."

I thought everyone got it so I didn't think it was worth mentioning. And Mixer, her full name was Mary Sue Poots.

So, will season 2 be the rebuilding of SHIELD?
I'm sure the movies take priority which means stalling as free agents until the next development in Age of Ultron. If the show is lucky, it'll be allowed some build-up as a tie-in.

I hope Jasper was an LMD.

I think Fury wanted Coulson back because if there was anyone who wasn't Hydra, it was Phil. But I don't have anything to base that on.

He also did not know the extent of Project Insight nor that whatever the problem was controlled it. He thought there might be a problem, though, which is why he asked to delay the project.

Where do you think he wanted to commit treason?
