Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

One Ward tidbit that I just thought of today. Sometime along the way--don't remember the exact episode--Ward claimed that the truth serum bit in the pilot had been faked. Perhaps by that point the writers had an inkling of where they were going with Ward, and realized that it would stretch credibility if he'd been questioned by Skye while under the influence and hadn't said anything to give away that he was working for Hydra...?

That was the pilot.

Besides she was only asking him about a covert evil sinister cabal trying to destroy world wide liberty from with in.

What's that got to do with Hydra?

...

Where's the inspirational poster with a picture of Skye looking at her S.H.I.E.L.D. badge, and the legend underneath says "Why can't I ever have anything nice?"

...

Loreli could have been talking about his "true love" being Sye, or that ginger witch could have been talking about that ##### in the flower dress, or he could actually love "Hydra" more than most people becuase of the brainwashing, drugs and conditioning it takes for Hydra to believe that you work for them.

C'mon... You don't think that S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't also put "drugs" into the coffee to make their Agents super-Loyal and a littler dumber?

Hmm?

Was S.H.I.E.L.D. partially financed by Hydra, or was S.H.I.E.L.D. a teet Hydra sucked from for all that World Council money? Not that Hydra is in it for the money, but money lubes ones way to an easy victory assuredly. But if Hydra was shovelling money into S.H.I.E.L.D., what is it that they are going to do be doing with that slush budget now?

Personally, I hope Ward stays the bad guy too.

Just speculating, I don't think Ward is innocent but from the sound of things, Natasha has done far worse in her day, yet she was forgiven and wasn't a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent at the time. Maybe S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn't care so long as the killing machine is on their side and their heart's in the right place.

She also started as a little kid. It's hard to say she had a free choice about things.

It is retroactively hilarious that Sky was finally made a full Agent of SHIELD the episode before it was disbanded

That was the pilot.
No, the truth serum incident happened in the pilot. It was referred to again in a later episode, at least a few episodes in. Skye brought it up and Ward responded by describing it as a "Level One overshare" and claimed that SHIELD didn't have a truth serum. When Skye confronted Coulson about it, his response was along the lines of, "He said that? Interesting."

And the nature of HYDRA is right there in its name: The monster with many heads, with two growing back for every one you cut off. So even if Garrett is defeated, HYDRA will still be there.

So why does the HYDRA symbol look more like an octopus (albeit with a human skull)? Looks more like it has lots of tentacles than heads. I'm just sayin'.

I wondered why they chose that episode to make her a full agent. It became retroactively clear even before the next episode aired ;)

Ask Jack Kirby. Probably it was easier to draw. But the Hydra has been described as a many-headed monster since at least 2600 years before Kirby's time.

And you've credited Captain Craig for my comment there. (I wish the board software had a more reliable way to match attributions to quotes.)

"Underinclusive" seems a very good way to describe the probable state of affairs in the wake of the HYDRA reveal. Early minutes, if not hours, after the Battle of the Triskelion, and the fatality reports, news feeds and internet traffic isn't even beginning to make a dent in understanding the nature and scope of the situation.

There's a theory that octopuses might have been responsible for inspiring the myth of the Lernean Hydra.

- They live in water but can travel on land like the Hydra.
- They're extremely strong and have been known to crush barrels to get at food inside.
- Some of them can intentionally detach an arm, and the arm will continue to wriggle around autonomously as a distraction to predators.
- Their limbs can be regenerated like the Hydra's heads.
- Some of them are extremely venomous like the Hydra (Heracles dipped his arrows in the venom).
- They wrap their arms around their prey like the Hydra did with its heads.
- They have eight legs and one central head, matching most descriptions of the nine headed (eight mortal tentacle-like heads and one central immortal head) Hydra.
- Octopuses might have also inspired the Gorgon Medusa in Greek myth, the Kraken in Norse myth, the Akkorokamui in Ainu myth in Japan/Russia, and is part of the Hawaiian creation myth.

So in that regard, it actually makes some sense to have an octopus represent HYDRA.

Plus, octopuses have long been associated with far-reaching, all-seeing, and sometimes oppressive organizations with their hands in everything (see below, a satellite logo from the National Reconnaissance Office):

Level Minus-Six.
Skye can be in charge of training Ward when he comes back.

I was actually thinking about how funny that was as I was walking out of CATWS on opening night.

Skye may hold the record for shortest-tenured Agent Of Shield who is still alive.

The next alien invasion, Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D. are going to have to team up, and after that, they're going to stay teamed up.

Although I don't think they will find the same level of humour that Parks and Recreation has generated with Eagleton and Pawnee melding into one.
