Where this show goes wrong, IMO, is the Star Trek factor. The 31st century, as depicted (& arguably failed) on DIS, is so far removed from the "known" Trek universe - it's tropes , it's rules, it's vibes - it would be much more preferably they'd do a Ender's Game, (honest) Starship Troopers' Academy, or some new IP.
32nd Century. The 31st Century is when The Burn itself happened. DSC S3-S5 and SFA take place a century after, but that's just a nitpick.
I discussed my growing problem with the 32nd Century somewhere else. I might as well copy-and-paste it here and let the chips fall where they may.
The thing that's been bugging me about the 32nd Century is that I remember when "Calypso" was released and it made The Future seem so mysterious. We still had that with Discovery's first few episodes in The Future. Then, once Discovery reaches Starfleet, all the mystery was gone. Not a deal-breaker, though, I could live with it. Earth not being part of the Federation, Starfleet Command being in space, Vulcans and Romulans reunified and Vulcan renamed Ni'Var? I still didn't have a problem with that because at least it was different from the 23rd-25th Centuries. The Emerald Chain seemed like good rival for the Future Federation. So, even though it wasn't mysterious anymore, I was still okay with all of it.
But then we find out The Burn was caused by a fucking scream! And the Emerald Chain, a perfectly good enemy to have, is taken out in no time. Both those of left a huge black mark on the third season. But the next season is a whole new story. Right? Blank page. Right?
After that, Ni'Var can't rejoin the Federation fast enough, with Earth not too far behind, and the Federation is mostly back by the end of the fourth season. Okay. This is television, I get it. The status quo has to be restored. It's fine.
Then comes the fifth season. The Spore Drive is completely abandoned, even though it's a solution to warp drive. They tie heavily back into the 24th Century, making it not feel like it was 800 years ago. I'm not bothered by what they did with the Breen because almost nothing was done with them on DS9 until the very end. But by now, the 32nd Century is starting to look more and more like Just Normal Star Trek. Bit-by-bit, what's made anything unique about it has been taken away. And then "Calypso" is established as being 1,000 years after the 33rd Century. So, great. The Calypso Era (that's what I call it) is mysterious again. But where does that leave the 32nd Century?
Let's see. As of the beginning of SFA, Starfleet is based on Earth again and so is Starfleet Academy. The bridge of the new ship looks like it would fit right in next to the SNW Enterprise. There's nothing to suggest it's the Far Future. A bridge from the 32nd Century should look weird to us, it should seem very futuristic, and it we should feel a little disoriented as we get used to it. SFA isn't that.
I wanted to see more and learn more about the 32nd Century, but it looks to me like the more they reveal about it, the less unique it becomes. Which makes me a lot less curious about it than I was before. It should be the other way around where the more I find out, the more I want to know, and the more questions I have.
So, if anything, I think the 32nd Century has been becoming
too much like the 23rd-25th Centuries. I didn't come to this conclusion all at once. It's something that I've been noticing bit-by-bit until it added up to what I'm now realizing.
