He has some big lows but a few highs as well. I'm cautiously optimistic.
A Beautiful Mind is a well-regarded film. I think A Time To Kill and Cinderella Man are okay. Notably none are SF. But his best genre work was probably I Robot, which isn't saying much. He's been involved in a ton of mediocre box office bombs as well.
Joel Schumacher made a lot of crap, too, but he also made Falling Down.
Why?
I can buy that Goldsman could possibly write a good script, but I've not seen a single episode of TV he's directed which has been good.
This clip has that feel of Star Trek that I love to have: capture the imagination, look up to the stars and wonder.

The latter is a possability; but as to 'Why' on the former -- What did the character do that was so noteworthy publicly? (The Spore Drive and his involvement was/is a Federation star state secret on penalty of death.)Why not? I don't see the issue.

Just on the drive, he was working on stuff before that.
Plus he was given a medal in a very public ceremony at the end of Season 1 for his involvement in the ending of the Klingon War. Really hard to hide that.

I'm thinking it will have the core elements of the TOS theme, with some flourishes around it.
That's one of the cool things I liked about the Kelvin films, they created their own TOS theme that was reminiscent of the original.
After getting 9/10 of the way through S2 of Picard, I've had a realization of sorts:
I would pay real money for SNW to not touch ANY sort of time travel with a ten foot pole. Let's get back to being Star Trek rather than Time Trek.

agreed but even in TOS, they had several Time travel adventures.
Too late, we already know there's going to be at least one time travel story.
It's an episodic series though, so any time travel story will be confined to a single episode.
