Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Again, he appears in the main poster, has his own poster, has his own trailer. It's odd to justify his not having his own picture because he's a recurring character. Wasn't M'Benga or another character also recurring? If so, they also have their own picture there. He's part of the cast, and looking awesome, I want to see more!
Well, then the trailer did its job!

Hemmer is basically this show's Season 1 Scotty in more than just onscreen job. James Doohan was never listed in the main cast for all three years of TOS even though in our minds he's an inseparable part of the main cast of characters.

According to wikipedia everyone except Hemmer is main.
That's kind of odd - and very similar to Reno in DSC, being the chief engineer, yet more of a periodically recurring character, as opposed to being a part of the senior staff. In all other shows prior to DSC, the engineer was always considered a part of the main crew.

I don't get that shift.

Obviously it may not be accurate since the season hasn't started, but IMDB lists him as being in 10 episodes. It has different more specific episode count numbers for Lt. Kyle and other recurring characters.

Because it isn't germane to the story, potentially.

IMDB also seems to have the director list for season 1 and some of the writing credits. May not be accurate, but here is what is says now:

1.1 - Teleplay and directed by Akiva Goldsman
1.2 - Written by Henry Alonso Myers and Sarah Tarkoff / Directed by Maja Vrvilo - has also directed for Picard and Discovery
1.3 - Written by Akela Cooper & Bill Wolkoff / Directed by Leslie Hope
1.4 - Written by Davy Perez & Beau DeMayo / Directed by Dan Liu
1.5 - Not stated
1.6 - Directed by Andi Armaganian - directed a season 4 discovery episode
1.7 - Directed by Sydney Freeland
1.8 - Directed by Amanda Row
1.9 - Directed by Christopher Byrne - has directed 3 Discovery episodes
1.10 - Directed by Chris Fisher

TNG had no regular engineer character in its first season. They didn't think they'd be doing much story stuff taking place either in engineering or involving the ship's functions. They discovered otherwise, and moved LaForge into that slot.

As others have mentioned, there were only three series regulars under season-long contracts in TOS. The engineer was not one of them.

O'Brien was referred to as "Chief of Operations" on DS9. He identified himself as "Chief Engineer" in at least one episode, "Tribunal."

Actually, Reno never was supposed to be Disco's chief engineer. In the first two seasons that was some unseen character. Indeed, in the episode An Obol for Charon Reno says she's been ordered by the chief engineer to assist Stamets with the spore drive.

In seasons 3 and 4 Stamets appears to be the chief engineer despite being a science officer and not an engineer as opposed to Reno, who is an actual engineer and outranks Stamets. Yet it's Stamets who seems to be the go to character for all engineering related matters now, even when they aren't related to the spore drive.

And she's also had to be careful during the pandemic. She's a double mastectomy recipient and likely has a compromised immune system.

Very true. And she has 2 5 year olds, who weren’t eligible for the vaccine themselves at the time she filmed her scenes in the summer of 2021, and just being apart from them at such a young age was a part of her publicly stated reasons for having such a limited role in season 4.

Also the reason Reno isn't seen very often is that Tig Notaro just doesn't want a lot of scenes.
Tig Notaro has stated she's concerned about COVID and doesn't like to travel unless it's absolutely necessary. The production staff accommodated Tig by arranging to have all her scenes for all the episodes she was a part of in season 4 shot consecutively over a couple of days.

DISCO's main cast wasn't the usual Trek line up. The lead in Discovery was a disgraced officer turned consultant. The other mains were a cadet, a Scientist, the Captain and the First Officer.
