I don’t see how it’s a bad idea. The original series was watched by families. I just don’t think that stuff is necessary.
I don't think its necessary but why not let them tell the story they want?
If the story really needs it, sure but I seriously doubt it. It was barely needed in Picard. It was just there for shock value.
Well, I was not shocked, thought it served the story, and wasn't a penultimate point in the series.
You could get rid of it and the story works just as well. That’s what I mean.
That's a fair point but I think that with a lot of things in Trek. Again, it's not shocking, even if it could be removed.
Regardless, it was a brief moment that didn't require the focus it got.

It was intended to be a show for adults. A reaction to the kiddie oriented SF being done elsewhere.
Being a family show doesn’t mean for kiddies. I would say so.
As I said the target audience for the show was adults. And it dealt with adult themes in ways that were permitted by the standards of the time. It wasn't made to be a family show.
Indeed. I don't see Picard being any way as the same style as TNG. It's closer to DS9 and certainly not what I would be watching with my family, even if my kids enjoyed Star Trek.
Honestly, this was not a meaningful distinction back in the day. Broadcast standards were such that both shows directed at kids and at adults adhered to the same restrictions on language, violence etc.
I was thinking more of story content.
I get what you mean but I’ve seen other shows made at the time that had the same restrictions but felt more adult. I got the impression from Trek that they always tried to have a balance.
When I was six, I didn't quite comprehend why Captain Kirk let the nice lady get hit by the truck.
Yeah, but I don't think that's what thribs is concerned with. He doesn't want to see characters with their eyes gouged out on screen or Spock yelling "The fucking WOMEN!"
I don't want the latter either. The former....I'm undecided.
