Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Something far from this:

I'm not saying his vision was perfect or consistent but there's some middle ground from the way it was done in Early TNG and how it's not being done today.
The ONLY action scenes should feature Pike projecting himself ass-first into an opponent's face, Kirk-style.

It does when the entire drive of the series is to get from one action scene to the next which is all I gathered from Discovery. How about a cool action scene where the ship constantly jumps from position to position using it's tardigrade-powered spore drive!

YEAH!!

Sorry, I'm not motivated, excited or impressed.

I can watch pretty much any of TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager or Enterprise and be sufficiently entertained (to vary degrees ont he those last three series) but when ever I see something from Discovery or a Short Trek I just get annoyed and feel like I'm watching something completely different. And I was with Picard up to a specific point and I got disgusted.

It's not about "Gene's vision" it's just the general look, feel, and tone of things and it's just not getting there with me and I don't see why this series should be anything different. I'll likely check out the first episode of two, but unless it radically shows me something I can get behind there's no reason for me to be all "Squeeeeee!!!!!" over this. And it's the third running Trek series in production now. Remember back when we thought things were getting over saturated with both DS9 and Voyager running and then they immediately going to Enterprise when Voyager ended?

What reason is there to think things are different now?

I've been a trek fan nearly my entire life and I've never been more excited. For me Star Trek is back and I love it. I also have 750 episode's of classic trek i can go back and watch. Life's pretty good.

Interesting to see who they cast as Boyce. In the new novel with Pike last year i believe Boyce was still the doctor. So assuming he will still be on ship.
They need significant characters in this show who are younger, they need more female characters who aren't walk-ons and they need people of color.

Boyce was an old man on a mission years before the "present" - he should be replaced.

I hope the show's remit is not to simulate a hypothetical season of Star Trek 1964, no matter how much some fans might want that.

Nice to hear official confirmation. It stops the speculative arguments about the show's title at least.

I'll be watching, along with everything else. However, it's by no means the Trek I'm most excited about. While I think Pike and co were fine, I don't get all the gushing about him that so many people are. Then again, I'm more excited about the S31 show then most people here, mostly because I love Georgiou. Sure, she might be a villain, of sorts, but she's an entertaining and lovable one.

Of the confirmed shows, I have to say SNW is the one I'm second least excited by. There's only the Nickelodeon thing I'm looking forward to less. I think that's mostly because I'm unlikely to get my partner interested in it, plus I suspect it'll end up on Nickelodeon in the UK as well, so I'll probably not get to see it for a long time after it's first shown (I refuse to pay for Sky or Vigin Media... I morally struggle with Amazon too, but it has too many exclusives for me not to).

Anyway, glad for more live action Trek, slightly underwhelmed by the setting. I will, at least, look forward to seeing more of Spock and the Discoprise though.

There's a rumor that S31 is being moved back because the producers want to keep Georgiou on season four of STD and Yeoh has other fish to fry.

New ‘Star Trek’ Series Featuring Spock and Pike Will Be ‘Optimistic and More Episodic,’ Creators Say

“Star Trek” is boldly going back to its roots.

CBS revealed Friday that it had given a series order to “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” a new show that will take place on the starship Enterprise in the years prior to James T. Kirk coming aboard as captain. The new show is set, like other recent “Star Trek” spinoffs, to stream on CBS All Access. But it will, according to co-creator and executive producer Akiva Goldsman, hew more closely to the original Kirk-era “Star Trek” in structure and tone than those other recent additions to the franchise have.

“We’re going to try to harken back to some classical ‘Trek’ values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic,” Goldsman tell Variety. “Obviously, we will take advantage of the serialized nature of character and story building. But I think our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either ‘Discovery’ or ‘Picard.'”

If the ongoing character development Variety talk about in any way realistic with the shit they go through, we'll have a crew of PTSD suffering emotional wrecks beaming down to planet Omicon VII by episode 8.

Of all the things to complain about ears and haircuts are way down on my list...
It only means that everything else about Spock was fine ;)

Don't let him get to you. If he wants to be bitter, then let him be. 95% of the people in this thread seem excited about this news. CBS All Access is trying to reach the 95, not the 5.
Someone make a poll - I'm sure the silent majority is happy and will wait for the episodes to then discuss actual on-screen stuff.

a dolphin captain, Half-Pakled science officer, Cardassians CMO, and Horta Chief of Security
I'd totally watch that! That has to be a short trek!

So... elephant in the room... Are we going to see the same-looking Klingons or are they going to take a page from Picard’s Romulans and have “northern” and “southern” Klingons?
Hopefully no Klingons at all.

Then again, I'm more excited about the S31 show then most people here, mostly because I love Georgiou. Sure, she might be a villain, of sorts, but she's an entertaining and lovable one.
What is lovable about her?? XD
The snake hissing, the "ugh!" after half her lines, the "killing my mom... it's a blur", or the delightful slaughter of slaves?

Good news on one hand, especially as this series will apparently be more optimistic and episodic. I do worry though about Star Trek becoming too reliant on nostalgia and the past instead of introducing new characters and stories. I also worry that Strange New Worlds may retcon things or shoehorn in Kirk for the sake of it.

It will interesting though if the Klingons return to a more traditional and recognisable appearance or Robert April is introduced.

I can already say I'll vehemently loathe everything about this show because it's about 95% certain (allowing for the standard error) it won't feature a surviving Captain Killy, who has escaped from Rura Penthe and became a space pirate, as a recurring villain. How dare CBSAA not cater to every single one of my whims and headcanons? The nerve!

Captain Killy can return. I don't buy for a second she died. My idea episode is she has hooked up with Harry Mudd in a plan to steal the Enterprise. Ends with Pike doing a karate chop to Mudd and Number One besting Captain Killy in a sword fight.

I hope they retire the Discovery aesthetic during its run and go with more TOS looking ships, like the Saladin and a TOS Miranda Class. Maybe even some of the STO designs.

I think they will make some changes and add some more TOS styling but it's still going to look very modern. I think the Engine Room will defiantly be different from what was shown in Short Treks.

They already designed sickbay...

Hopefully with those blocks on the wall where you can put your feet on and see in which shape you're in. :-D

I would also like Boyce back but to me the only characters I care to see return as regulars from The Cage is Pike,Spock,Number One and Boyce. The rest of cast should be filled with new characters and like mentioned more diversity. I think they should have maybe 8 series regular all together. Also they should not ignore the Pike comic book. Moves with Burning Grace, Sita Mohindas, Nano and I would even toss in the idea of a young Admiral Morrow and the captain from the Tribble Short Trek episode who has returned in disgrace after her failed command looking for redemption.
