The supernova was already canon. He isn't canonizing it.

Ugh. Not this again. CBS can say things are canon, but that doesn't mean future productions will respect that. TAS is such an example, and I'm sure you can find things in the movies or TNG that contradict/ignore elements therein. Furthermore, ST'09 itself ignored (or took major liberties) with established canon. Why is Pike about 10 years older in the Kelvinverse, when he was born before the timeline split? Why is Kirk's mom -- who is on the verge of giving birth -- on a starship in deep space before the timeline split, when canon establishes Kirk was born in Iowa? etc...

All I'm saying is that if Kurtzman is obliged to uphold CBS canon, he has to include Sybok.

The spin off might not be coming out until DSC is completely over, and according to a recent interview, Georgiou will also be in Season 3 if they get renewed.
Yeah that wont surprise me to be honest, the question is how long will Discovery continue for and does the success and good reception for Pike make the Georgiou/S31 show closer or further away.

Its all a question of renewal, it wouldn't surprise me if they have multiple options and are just waiting to see fan reactions before they make their move, its what I would do.

They must realise that a Pike/Enterprise show leading into the possibility of a Kirk/Enterprise show is their strongest play right now, I would be ok with a Georgiou/S31 series even though I am not convinced it would be enough to base a whole show on but I know there are a lot of fans who wont want anything to do with it.

So is it really worth making a show based on a MU character that many don't like working as a member of an organisation that many wish didn't exist, MU Georgiou and S31 are better off used sparingly when the plot truly has a place for them rather than throwing them in everywhere.

I understand their thinking with Picard as it could be a way to introduce and then spin off a whole host of post Kelvin shows if they want to.

If future productions don't "respect" it, that it will mean CBS has decanonized it. The production people do not work independently of CBS.

You could say that about everything in Star Trek.

It's funny how Trek can contradict itself sometimes. In VOYAGER episode "Fury" it's stated that you can maneuver while at warp, that you can only go a straight line "faster than light, no left or right". Except we saw starships maneuver at warp dozens of times before that, and plenty of times after that episode too. Much like how the conceit of cloaking being a new tech in "Balance of Terror" has been "decanonized" due to ENTERPRISE and DISCOVERY featuring cloaking tech.

No that's not believable to me. They should go with the TOS regular crew size which is over 400. The Enterprise scale in this show is also much bigger than the ship in TOS. That does not work for me. I ding it for that.

No Season one was not ensemble for me. Not even a little. All those bridge officers in roll call should have had larger roles from day one. They are NOT random background extras and if they go back to being such I won't like this season much.
They probably will in that I think (with all the damage the 1701 has from the 'Red Angel' incident) - she's going to get a refit, and sometime near (or at) the end of this Season (when Pike returns to Commanding her - she'll LOOK like the 1701 we know from the TOS TV series and the'll mention she now holds 432 crew.

Quick review: Discovery is basically the TV Prime Universe done in the style and tone of the Kelvin movies.

I actually wish the debris action sequence with the breaking glass and killed off cocky officer wasn't beat for beat rehashed from the Kelvin movies. I'm guessing they're trying to draw the audience of those films on to this now.

Some of the tech was also going a bit overboard, especially that suit that generates around the user like Iron Man. Very superhero-ish, but makes the other shows look so low tech in comparison.

This is the kind of thing I would have been cool with for the post-Nemesis show, but pre-Kirk....errr

Spock in TOS said he saw a Dragon like creature on Berengaria VII

Maybe that's what he drew in this episode from his nightmares.

I doubt it. Maybe something similar to what we saw on the computer screen in Episode 1, but it won't be 1:1 to TOS.

It doesn't look like it's generating from nothing. It looks like it's coming from somewhere.

You know, I'm not gonna waste to many words on what I thought. I know what I like and dislike. And I liked this. A LOT!!! Entertaining, fun, exciting, emotional. Good stuff. Loved it. Discovery rules, for me personally.

Seconded!

I loved this episode! It's early, and I'm going off of two near back-to-back viewings, but this episode was more enjoyable than any of Season 1 (and I liked S1 for the most part).

And apologies if these comments have already been touched on, but I didn't feel like spending all afternoon wading through 50 pages of comments -- I really need to get here sooner after the episode airs!

By the way, I was looking at the credits and it looks like they recast Sarah Mitich. I talked to her at the convention in Las Vegas and she is no longer Airiam.

She appears as Lt. Nilsson, haven't watched yet? Is she in heavy make up or more human looking? In make up she was heavily underused...

Lt. Nilsson appears to be human. She's in the asteroid-collection scene. In fact, there's a shot where Tilly is flanked by Nilsson & nu-Airiam, which is kind of neat. So far tho, I'm missing Mitich's Airiam, she seemed cuter -- which is kind of weird to say about someone with a mechanical face. :D

I'm certainly curious about the behind-the-scenes reason why Mitich left the role. Did she not want anything more to do with the heavy prosthetics, yet still wanted to be part of the show (hence Lt. Nilsson)? Did TPTB want to take the character "in a new direction," which required a recast for some reason?

wasn't he originally from a planet ruled by some shakespeare actor?

she will look close but not identical - where'd be the merchandize in that?

Maybe like with the makeup on Mira Furlan and Terry Ferrell, it was decided they had an actress with a pretty face, and it was sort of a waste to hide it under that much latex and rubber.
