I honestly think the heavy action spectacle of "Brother" was just the effect of wanting to do the traditional "big splash" of a premier event, combined with setting the tone for S2.

I doubt the rest of the season will regularly follow-suit. Even if they WANTED to make every episode like "Star Trek Into Darkness..." the budget wouldn't support it. They'll be looking to do a fair amount of smaller stuff in the support of the overall arc I'd guess.
Yes. You are probably and hopefully right.

There was no wrong answer in "What Are Little Girls Made Of". ;)

yep

also the story was by robert bloch not some random tv-series regular - it needed tv adaptation, though. a lot of tos stories were by notable sf authors, but i don't think we can get that back. i would easily kill for that to happen.

The amount of political crap in some TV shows and Films is getting so bad in places even I notice it and its doing a lot of damage to the Franchises (take a bow TLJ & Doctor Who), I am able to watch the shows fine but sometimes it can be a bit cringe, some members of the fandom waited decades for a continuation of their favourite shows/films and were horrified at what was done to them in the name of political correctness.

I was able to watch last season fine, it had its issues which I mentioned at the time but a lot of it was due to the issues behind the scenes during production, the show not really knowing what it is and of course the unnecessary visual changes to the Klingons and their ships.

It is clear from S02E01 alone that they listened and have resolved a large number of those issues, toned down the political stuff/halo polishing (it wasn't that bad in the first place though) and let the story drive the episode not the sanctimonious message, the actors all seem to have a better idea of who they are supposed to be and are visibly more comfortable, the same thing happened in TNG, the first season was a bit hit and miss with everyone new in their roles.

Essentially the political correctness in TV and Film was turned up from 1 all the way to 100 in the blink of an eye, unsurprisingly that has caused the backlash to go straight from 1 to 100 in response and that caught the scriptwriters and producers right in the face, a balance will be found in time but until then its going to be very much a case of love it or hate it from the majority, with a few individuals like me who can appreciate both sides of the argument.

Ultimately the scriptwriters and producers overplayed their hand and made the show/films too preachy, self righteous and condescending when all the audience wanted was to be entertained, it also meant the story and characters suffered for it, the fans then made their disappointment very clear, you just have to look at Solo's numbers to see that.

What really triggered such a powerful backlash wasn't really the issues with the shows or films, it was Hollywood's disgusting reaction and treatment of the fans in the aftermath, the same fans that made these franchises huge in the first place.

We all know which film is going to be put under the microscope next, Captain Marvel, I do know that reshoots have been done which could mean Disney isn't taking any chances, they cant afford for the Marvel franchise to take a hit like Star Wars has especially after what has happened to the DC franchise.

Trust had been lost and it must be restored, in Discovery's case it has been in my opinion, if some feel otherwise then that is fair enough.

Sorry about the length but the issues facing Discovery were the same across Hollywood and it was not really possible to talk about one without the other.

Uhuh

I can understand the complaint about the action sequence, but the ep introduced Pike; explored his dynamic with the crew (Saru to a surprising degree); finally introduced us to the bridge crew; showed the crew actually working together; finally let Stamets grieve Culber; established Burnham's relationship with Spock; introduced Jet and her unusual skill set; and launched the season-long mystery, in addition to giving us a phaser-free action sequence of substantial length. After a first season that raced from plot twist to plot twist, that was plenty for me.
Well. It was a bunch of scenes that set up things for the later. Which in serialised format are needed, but it still means that this episode hardly had a plot. Maybe this bothers me more because this show (unlike most Netflix shows these days) is released in piecemeal, and I cannot just instantly watch the next episode...

is there anything more trekie than killing off random redshirts (in whatever coloured uniforms)? when i saw tos as a kid i soon found a nice hobby - which of the crew on a away mission i had not seen before won't make it back alive?
Interestingly enough, I was reading an Ex Scienta Astris article and it noted that the first couple of deaths on screen were blue and gold shirts. It was very interesting.

I tend to prefer more episodic myself. My ideal would probably be serialized episodic, where we get a full story each week or two, but with ongoing consequences. But that was one reason I liked the rescue mission. It was a complete little adventure, with a great new character at the end. And I loved seeing the crew working together for such Trekkish purposes.

You got Michael Chabon writing Calypso.

I am late to the party; resubscribed to CBS the day of premier; I go to bed early so watched 2 short treks with my wife; then 2 more before DSC. All of them seem WAY more like what I like, than DSC is. I looked and don't see a thread about that here.

It was different in that earlier era: people, including GR and established, high-quality writers (Sturgeon! Bloch! Bixby! et al.) who liked tellling/writing stories, competing to be hired.

As opposed to now, needing to fill an X-episode arc somehow because something called Trek will make CBS money, with episodes fleshed out by staff writers in a writers' room. I guess we'll see how the caliber of those folks fleshes out esp. past the point where the leaders got fired for being mean.

I was just having some fun! The Complete History of Red Shirt Deaths is a hobby of mine.

It actually is funny that early on (Man Trap in particular) it's the gold and blue shirts that bite the dust.

yeah, but the mass-offings are always redshirts

i'm not supossed to have seen that, but i hate it (that's nothing serious - i usually can't stand 10..00 years later stories)

that's one short piece, check tos for big names and stand in awe

I gave it a seven. Really liked it but it didn’t blow me away.

It was nice to see the Enterprise, but not enough of it. Seems to be no right to privacy in Star Fleet, Spock goes on leave and anyone can snoop round his room and read his diary?
