I actually wish the debris action sequence with the breaking glass and killed off cocky officer wasn't beat for beat rehashed from the Kelvin movies. I'm guessing they're trying to draw the audience of those films on to this now.

Some of the tech was also going a bit overboard, especially that suit that generates around the user like Iron Man. Very superhero-ish, but makes the other shows look so low tech in comparison.

This is the kind of thing I would have been cool with for the post-Nemesis show, but pre-Kirk....errr

I agree. The suits were very much like iron man or power rangers. I even wondered where did the helmet go. It just seemed to disappear and appear out of thin air. And yeah, post-nemesis, they could introduce new suits that are more high tech. But pre-Kirk, it feels like a huge retcon. I know they are just modernizing the show to meet today's expectations of what we consider to be cool. And I am not suggesting that they make the show look like a 60's show just to fit with TOS. But clearly Discovery is going for a Kelvin movie style with a focus on flashy cool action and quick, quippy humor. It's what's "in" right now in terms of what producers think make a successful scifi show.

For better or worse, though...people have to go with what's "in" to have a chance at surviving.

No clothing company is doubling-down on thin neckties, acid-washed jeans, or leisure suits right now. Unfortunately, companies that produce things for the public need to keep with the trends of the times, or be irrelevant.

Star Trek can handle it, though. We've been adapting / updating / evolving for 5 decades!

Sure, Trek can handle it. I am not worried. I was merely making an observation of what the trend is right now.

Yeah the suit doesn't come out of nowhere.

The EV Suit makes sense.

What doesn't make sense is that tractor beam they assembled in the shuttlebay.
That sequence is something I'm suspending disbelief about. I have to watch again, but did they mention they dropped shields before letting that asteroid (made of an unknown substance that may have had a disastrous effect on the ship upon being brought aboard!) in?

who makes asteroids? the mk III gravity simulator comes with a biohazard forcefield btw

Watching a third time, Burnham's quarters are very small compared to Spock, considering she is a Commander and he is a Lieutenant.
Sarek reminds me of the parents who are very good with other people's children but get it wrong every time with their own. (I have an aunt like this).
Pike - I love him and want to have his babies :luvlove:

Considering that the Enterprise had space for 400 crewpeople but during Pike's 5 year mission only 203 were aboard the ship, it kinda makes sense that their quarters are double the size they normaly would be.

obviously the connie is a type with lots of upgradability which among others needs space. i think i remember 6 persons bunks (for enlisted personnel) somewhere in tos

even bigger - that additional personnel needs something to do which also requires space inside the hulls

it's not a tractor beam but a gravity simulator, next ...
Did they say what it was in dialogue? If so I missed it. And saying next like that, it's very condescending.

Also there is a multi-quote function, better then doing multiple posts.

The silly thing about the complaint about PC casting is that naysayers seem to think CBS is only doing that out of trying to appear altruistic for liberals and SJW, when the truth is that it's really just all about money. If diverse casting has proven anything, it's that it appeals to a larger group of audiences, thus more people are likely to watch it. It's a huge part of why THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS franchise has become so big internationally because of its diverse casting.

I do not understand humans who do not want to admit there are other humans on the planet who are not replicas of their DNA and who also watch TV and spend money. Ignoramuses.

same here, when they came up with gay couples in tv-ads they weren't nice they just had found out that gay couples are nearly always dinks, and dinks got more money than traditional families.

the few cro-magnons who stopped buying stuff they had bought for 20 years were easily replaced by people delighted to be finally recognized.
