Would you give your child a trekkie name?

I don't see a problem with a nice name like James, Tasha or Deanna, but something like Spock or Seven would be tantamount to child cruelty.
What he said... and what Dennis said, too.:techman:

I love Star Trek, but my two kids have normal boy and girl names and no one ever ridiculed those names.

I would only use a name that also looked and sounded like a normal name--I have no wish to set up my child to get picked on.

"Kira" is a choice that comes high on the list for me. WAAAY before I watched DS9, Kira was the name of my very first friend, as a child. So I think that giving that name to my own daughter, whenever I have children, is one that would make sense. ESPECIALLY because I would also have a good non-Trek reason that I think would be something my daughter could be proud of.

For a son, Miles is actually not a bad name...however, I would avoid it because of the non-DS9 jokes it would be likely to engender. Again, not getting my kid teased is paramount. Same reason for eliminating "Julian," however much I like that name.

But overall, MOST Trek names I would not use. "Kira," I think, is the one exception.

No. I don't want children, but I wouldn't, although I'd definitely name a cat after a character. I do think that Julian is a lovely name, though, and I did first hear it from DS9.

People have a problem with "Miles"? There are Miles jokes?

Julian seems like a nice name too. Whats the problem there?

I'm wondering about that, too. They seem like two perfectly normal names in an English-speaking country.

Well, it's not that Miles would necessarily get HORRIBLE jokes, but I can just see the "miles and miles and miles" comments. And Julian--I like it, but I would never give it to my son because the poor kid would be teased for having what sounds so similar to a woman's name (Julienne). It's in the same category as naming your son "Shannon" or "Leslie," in my book.

My youngest is named Leonard James Scotty McSulu.
:wtf:

When I started writing TNG parodies, I changed "Miles" to "Kilometres." No doubt Keiko also wonders why Miles' parents hadn't gone metric by the 24th century. ;)

Julian is a perfectly nice name. I knew a guy in RL with that name - he was quite a good singer. :)

But if you want to name a girl after Seven of Nine - how about "Annika"? It's a perfectly good Swedish name.

First of all, many kids get taunted for their names no matter what their names are. It's just a matter of fact. There are MANY trek names that would blend in nicely, so people that say NO WAY right off the bat are jumping to conclusions without really thinking about it. Miles is a GREAT name and i doubt anyone would suspect you named your son after Miles O'Brian from Star Trek.

People often ask me why i didnt give my kids Trek names...and the truth is, we did throw a couple of names out there when i was pregnant with my daughter. We considered Lwaxana for about a minute and a half. We wanted names that weren't common names.

Now i wish i had given them at least MIDDLE names that were derived from Star Trek. For the last couple of years it has been a joke between my son (who is 25) and myself that if he really loved me, he'd change his middle name to Tiberius.

Well, a couple of months ago (this is after he saw the new movie) we were on the phone talking...and once again i said, "i wish i named you Tiberius!" And he said....."I've actually been thinking of changing my middle name to Tiberius.... I think it would be so cool!" (his initials would then be A.T.M, which he likes....LOL, when he was a kid we called him "Alex P. Keaton", so it would fit)...

Anyway, he is in the process of changing his middle name to Tiberius and even though some of you may gag....it makes this mom very happy and very proud. Hey, he's 25, is a UVA graduate, holds an GREAT job, and is a wonderful young man. I think he's awesome and as Spock's mom would say, "I'm a proud mother!"

Kids will get teased no matter what name you give them. It's pretty much how kid brains operate.

My name is Michael, which sounds similar to Michelle. What were my parents thinking????!!!!!!

Yes, I am sure you'd get teased as much as someone called Seven... :cardie: :vulcan:

If its not their name it will be their hair color, their glasses, the way they talk or something else.

The second part of my post was sarcasm at the whole Julian/Julienne thing.

Hope that clears things up.

My cousin married a Star Wars fan and was talked into naming her first born son Luke. But when her daughter came around she flat out refused naming the kid "Leia." (I wish I was joking but I'm not!)

I don't see anything wrong with names like William (Riker) or Beverly (Crusher).

Not particularly keen on that, because of the language barrier. Even if I would name the kid something inconspicuous like James or Leonard or Benjamin, it would sound weird and pretentious in Italy.

I'm not opposed to translating them, tho: Leonardo has a nice ring to it. ;)

While I do hope that children are a long way off for me, I don't see anything particularly wrong with giving children a "Trekkie" name, so long as it is subtle. For instance, little James and Deanna would do just fine on the playground.

Their little brother Spock might not.

I personally have been there, done that. I've got a singular pointed ear, something I was born with. Nothing serious, just a teeny extra bit of skin on the top of my ear that points out a bit. I've often been called 'Spock' by peers, and in more recent years, 'Spockette' as a nod to the fact I'm actually a girl, I suppose.

However, now that I am thinking on it, there are a few not quite so normal sounding names I am not opposed to using. Miri is a prime example off the top of my head. I think it has a sweet, delicate sound to it and wouldn't mind calling any daughter I may have in the future by it. Nor would I mind calling a boy by the name Riker. It would actually fit in nicely amongst some of the names of little boys I know.

Where does the name "Jadzia" come from? I think I'm correct in saying it is a "Trek" name as much as "Spock" or "Seven". However, I think it's a beautiful name and may be persuaded to alter my mind from my original post by this one.
