So after having listened to Star Trek Khan (which I thought was awesome BTW and would have made a great mini series) and then watching First Contact I began to think and form a conjectual history of Earth in the mid 21st Century.
I don't believe the so-called Eugenics Wars were part of a prelude to the "WW3" (more on that later). My theory about the Eugenics Wars (mislabeled as they are) is: these were proxy wars in the early 21st Century that were concentrated in the Middle East, Africa or Asian regions. The "Augment" leaders were backed by different countries such as in Europe, Russia, China, and The US in exchange for access to influence and raw materials of the region. The Augments themselves (Like Khan) began to implement their own version of Eugenics (thus the name of the wars) on those people in the region that they deemed inferior. As such their backers in this proxy wars began to cut off supplies and resources to them, eventually leading to their downfall. Khan was able to escape with 70 of his people before the end but agumented DNA had infiltrated the Human Species.
What is called WW3 was a limited Nuclear Exchange of a handful of missiles that knocked out vital economic and communication centers in the 2250s thus leading to weakened nation states. An unknown force launches a missile at the US and hits Chicago (yes this is taken from House of Dynamite). The resulting attack destabilizes the US. A limited exchange of missiles between nuclear countries occurs but an all out nuclear exchange is halted before major economic and enviromental damage can occur. However the limited exchange is still enough to disrupt the global world. Following the exchange the worlds nuclear powers are pressured by the non nuclear powers to give up the weapons. Thus begins a world wide disarmament of nuclear weapons and a move towards a one world government.
Which now brings me to Warp Drive. In the real world the creation of an FTL drive would be akin to the splitting of the atom: a physics phenomon that would fundamentally change the world. As such I feel that the development of such a system would be likened to the Manhattan Project.
Prior to WW3 most of the worlds nations began a commitment to exploring FTL space travel. However much was needed to overcome. In the US Physics Prof DR. Zefram Cochrane was placed at the head of a research team that encompasses several hundred people working across the US. Cochrane created his lab and testing area in Bozeman Montana after being given a defunct Missile to test by the USAF.
The main problem with FTL as experienced by other nations is an object would literally tear itself apart or disappear completely. The latter was a result of time dillation a problem that could not be overcome. Various types of drives were tried but none succesfully. Cochranes legacy is not in his development of a warp drive, but rather in his development of a containment field that overcame these issues, what is referred to as a warp bubble. Cochrane creates a stable warp field by balancing the warp drive in two seperate nacelles. The team is ecstatic and tests begin with inert objects. Construction begins a warp ship overseen by Cochrane at his Bozeman lab. However before completion WW3 breaks out. Faced with other pressing matters funding for the Warp Ship is unavailable. After the war Cochrane gathers all of the researchers he can find at his Bozeman MT facility.
A private donor gives Cochrane money to finish the warp ship. Cochrane as leader of the Warp Project agrees to Pilot the first warp flight in a ship he dubs the Phoenix. It will be the first live test of a the warp drive and warp bubble in human history. The test is successful on April 5 2063 and attracts the attention of an alien species passing through the SOL system. From here on Earths trajectory is ultimately changed...
As for history, while several competing programs were underway for an FTL drive and Hundreds of people were involved in Cochranes development his name is ultimately the name associated with development and testing of the first human Warp Drive.
Thoughts?
