Voyager season 3

My rankings can change depending on how much I've discussed things. There have been a few times where after a long discussion about an episode I end up thinking about it in a different way and liking it more/less.
The discussion here, although brief, is what made me go back and rewatch Worst case scenario. And my opinion on that one improved as a result.

To me False Profits is 'Worst episode ever' level bad. Only possibly matched by Threshold and the Fair Haven eps. It nearly made me quit the show.

It's basically a combination of all the worst things Voyager does. Missing out on a chance to get back home (Which the audience knows from the start will happen because it's not the series finale) by a series of events that required completely incompetent ship security and 'Moral busybody' syndrome. Complete with a strange interpretation of the prime directive that required convoluted plans, and a TNG season 1 cartoonish interpretation of the Ferengi.

False Profits is the Voyager equivalent of if DS9 had an episode where Dr Bashir hit on Lwaxana Troi while treating her for a deadly infection manifest from people's imagination trapped in a board game played by a gender reassigned Quark against a racist Vulcan, Vic Fontaine and a real manifest children's folklore character.

Of course it did. There's a reason why it's my fav ep :biggrin::biggrin:.
And what about the continuation of Voyager's (and your :)) journey? Are we going to have a Voyager season 4 thread soon?

 on Scorpion...and I'll probably post the season 4 thread sometime tomorrow... I'm up to Scientific Method I think so far.

Agree on FP. I disliked that one pretty moderately when I watched it and I have no desire to go back and rewatch to give it another chance. I wasn't a fan of Threshold either (though the general concept I did find interesting), but if I had been expecting to see stuff like
Paris coughing his tongue out
I might have... disliked it less. Let's put it that way.

From what I've read, Kate Mulgrew had some resentment when Jeri Ryan came along. I can kind of understand it. She was not happy that a "hot young blonde" had to be brought in. They were never best friends on set. Frankly, I don't love all of my coworkers either. But as you will see, their personal feelings behind the scenes had no impact on their characters.

I know that some watchers have some reproaches to make to Kate Mulgrew in ST: Voyager (her voice, her acting, her refusal to see J/C involved romantically, her character) but I hope that they are enough honest to recognize her professionalism. Yes, she didn't get along with Jeri Ryan but it seems to me that it was never seen on the screen, because both were able to put their "disenchantment" aside to do their job. Besides, isn't it what we ask the actors, to perform as if they were in the character's?!

I liked the episode marking Kes departure, not because Jennifer Lien was written off but because, the scene between Janeway and Kes, in the quarters of the latter, was moving. The hug and tears were not acted but very real. In fact, in this room, it wasn't Kes & Janeway talking a last time anymore but Jennifer Lien and Kate Mulgrew sharing a hug and crying. We can guess how both were close.

Worst episodes, all seasons:

1. That insulting piece of crap episode in season 6

2. The Gift

3. Endgame

4. Mortal Coil

5. Message In A Bottle

Worst episodes? Those are some of the best!
Best?
They are horrible.:barf2:

1. That insulting piece of crap episode in season 6
A sick, disgusting and insulting episode which never should have been made. Worst episode ever in any TV series.

2. The Gift
A thin, unconvincing story only written for the shady purpose of kicking out a great character. It looks like the "writer" wrote it on his 5 minuets coffee-break ore when he was sitting on the toilet.

3. Endgame
Boring, confusing and insulting episode. Voyager would have deserved something better as end episode.

4. Mortal Coil
Mean episode which trashed Neelix's hope of seeing his loved ones in the afterlife. Plus Super-Seven bringing people back to life after they died. Yes, she could repair anything, no matter if it was the warp core, dead people or Janeway's hair-dryer.

5. Message In A Bottle
Ruined the whole premise of the show. Voyager was supposed to be lost in space with no one on Earth knowing if they were dead or alive, remember?

I could easily name a few other from the later seasons as well, like that one when they tried to re-make seasons 1, 2 and 3 as if Seven had been on board during the whole mission.

This is an excellent post... I agree with every word. Though I haven't seen too many of the later season eps I have seen several that include substantial interaction between Mulgrew's and Ryan's characters and you would never, ever know that there were any negative vibes between the two. That really speaks to the professionalism of both actors, and it's the reason (as you say) that we watch the show. I also totally agree on that particular scene when Kes departs... that really seemed to be heartfelt emotion and, maybe some of it was, but Mulgrew has (imo) a really genuine presence on screen, and I think it's partly because she's able to successfully harness her emotions and channel them into the scene/role. You can really see this in her facial expressions at times (the closing shot in Tuvix was another I can recall immediately).

@Lynx Many thanks for your lists, points, and opinion of the eps! As I've said before- I love those ranked lists that you post. I don't agree with you on all the eps (diversity is key!), but I love reading your thoughts on them....

Thanks for the appreciation of my lists and reviews, even if some of my reviews aren't that nice. As for more detailed reviews of the season 1-3 episodes, please visit the Kes Website (link below). :techman:

As for the seasons 4-7 episodes, it will be more difficult to review those because I only watched them once and that was back in 2000-2001, in fact I quit watching after a certain episode so I haven't watched season 7 except for "Endgame" and that episode is not a favorite, to say the least. In fact, the season 4-7 episodes I remember most was the really bad ones.

However, there were a few episodes I really liked, such as "Nemesis", "Equinox" and "Blink Of An Eye".

"Nemesis" because it's probably the best Chakotay episode and the other two for having some unique concepts.

Holy rotten spoilers, Batman!

I was referring to the Picardo episode.

I'm not crazy about Mortal Coil. I think Neelix is going to die of a heart attack by age 45. He really needs to Chillax, but I love the rest of those.

Favorites of Season 4:

The Gift
Nemesis
The Raven
Scientific Method
Concerning Flight
Message in a Bottle
Hunters
Living Witness
Demon
One
Hope and Fear

"Revulsion" is a very good episode, but I don't like watching it.

The few I didn't mention are all pretty good, I think. Everyone loves "Year of Hell." Two of the Chakotay episodes are bottle episodes, and don't seem to be very popular among fans, but I've always really liked them. They are "Waking Moments," and "Unforgettable." Apparently, Unforgettable is Robert Beltran's favorite episode of the series.

"Vis a Vis" is an interesting Paris episode. It's weird, but a good character study.

"Random Thoughts" is a B'elanna/Tuvok episode, and they have great chemistry on screen.

"Prey" is good, with a bold writing decision at the end.

The episode in between "Prey" and "Killing Game" (I can't remember the name)is a good story, and well done, but it gets me really angry at the captain and doctor.

The only ones I'm not too keen on are "Omega Directive," and "The Killing Game."

I listed this as a favorite, but (I'd just like to mention)I think "Hunters" is so underrated. It's such a good episode, and starts an ongoing arc that goes through season 7.

Did I miss any?

So this is a season 3 thread

Watching Warlord, Janeway seems rather unconcerned about Ensign Yellowshirt being killed. There's also the old "neelix as whipping boy" when Paris and Kim change his holodeck program, a continuous story frame for the next 4 years.

Does make me wonder how Kes's story would continue through to season 7.

I enjoy that episode as well. I liked how she left and the "gift" she gave them. I kind of thought the goodbye between her and Janeway was a little overdone. I don't think Lien is that great at expressing strong emotion.
